Widespread AT&T data outage - September 3rd, 2008

There are multiple reports of a widespread AT&T data outage affecting both 3G and EDGE networks. Phones show as connected to 3G or EDGE, but cannot access data. Voice, visual voicemail, and SMS are unaffected.
Reports so far from Boston, DC, Chicago, St. Louis, etc., but given the time difference it's possible that other parts of the country are affected as well. A call to AT&T support confirmed the outage as 'affecting many cities'. A few reports in the Apple Discussions so far, more on AT&T's forum, and at least one blogger's confirmation picked up by Google.

The last major outage (February, 2008) lasted approximately 9 hours.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'm in Richmond, VA and while phone and text are working fine, I'm getting no data access - no internet, email, etc. this morning. Looks like the last time it pushed email to my phone was about 3am last night.

Not to be a doomsayer, but I just got off the (landline) phone w/ AT&T and they deny that there is a data or voice outage affecting DC Metro (MD/NoVA/DC).
09/03/08 @0845EDT.
For whatever reason, I have no access to 'net or email over iturd^^ Iphone...

Weird - no data connectivity on iphone, full data connectivity as in push email and web access on Blackberry Pearl (Edge) sitting 3 inches next to my iPhone (-)3G ???
P.S. - I should have said - Both on AT&T

Seeing the outage here on the southcoast of MA. No data service on either Edge or 3G network. Have tried different locations and several different phones. Just jumping on the bandwagon! Sister-in-law is reporting the same problem in MD.

I live just outside DC and work in town. Funny I got a different answer. I just got off the phone with AT&T and they told me that there is a data service problem with these phones. He made it sound like it was just affecting the Iphone. I just got my new 3g last week and it was working beautifully until last night. This morning I couldn't even get data through the wifi at Starbucks. The AT&T person told me that it affects the wifi as well. Is that correct? Don't understand why I can't use the wifi if the 3g is down. Are they connected somehow?
I sure hope this comes back soon! The whole reason I bought the phone was for the data service.

AT&T told me that it was just affecting these phones. I'm not sure how that works, but evidently its a problem just with the iphone. That would explain why the Blackberry is still working.

Same here in NH. Had access to email in the morning around 8 and since then nothing. Safari doesn't open any pages, all other apps do nothing. This really *****. I don't know if its Apple or AT&T but apple is moving right along Microsoft's line.

Here reporting from NYC and few hours ago Rockland County... no service on either 3G or EDGE.
sigh i have a nice shiny white and black brick on my hands....

DC Metro / Fairfax Virginia area here -- same issue no data flow at all.
I was really worried since yesterday I accidentally dropped my iPhone and it has a small little dent on the top right, and the day after I was unable to do anything edge dependent. I was planning a trip to the apple store and everything until I came here. Thanks guys
