Well, the new logic board lasted all of 11 days -- thank goodness the repair has a 90 day warranty. I feel like I'm throwing good money after bad.
I'm returning to the authorized dealer where I had the repair done -- I imagine the logic board will just get replaced again.
Not exactly confidence inspiring.

In the service, the guys said that they gonna change the display, so with what we know, I can spect a new display and a new logic board (they gonna see that nothing changes by only installing new display).
Please Candelabre, would you try to fix your old logic board when you have some time and tell us what you did and if it worked when you done?

After close examination of the two logicboard, there is nothing showing different between the two: the problem is "inside", either in the NVidia chip (like all the NVidia problems let us suppose) or firmware. I had to give the logicboard back as I'm still covered by AppleCare and didn't pay for the part.
So I didn't do much: backed up, opened, remove, put new one in place, and boot
I've put some photos of the two MLB in my Flickr set, http://www.flickr.com/photos/mpie/sets/72157600383812520/

I should start crying, my MacBook Pro (2.2G 8600GT) was crashed yesterday as the same case, the blank screen seems like an evil. I haven't do anything before~ just turn it off as usual, and then it showed me a cute blank screen when I re-turned on the power.
Today I've been to a customer care centre, and finally they told me that the 8600GT was died. They suggested me to replace the mainboard, and the reason is that the video card was already integrated with mainboard......If they want me to pay USD$1200 to replace a stupid brand new mainboard, I can directly spend this money to buy a brand new MBP back, this is impossible and can't be accepted! :=(

Not to belabor the point, but I looked at my Software install log since April 2008 and there seems to have been numerous attempts to make this EFI 1.5.1 update work.
Fortunately I have an external monitor so I can actually use my laptop. But I am getting pretty fed up with this problem.

No no, you should check your configurations, because many of us cannot even use an external monitor (because the nvidia is burned up!).
If you can use an external monitor, probably the problem is else where.

Same problem on my MBP. I hear fans and drives, but my keyboard doesn't respond to any keystrokes and my display is blank. It started out being sporadic, but is now the norm as it won't go any further in the booting process. Wish I would have bought AppleCare afterall. Hindsight.

If your external display works you have a working graphics card and therefore a different problem.
Did you actually LAUNCH the 'MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update' after it was installed in your /Applications/Utilities folder?

All those log entries for the MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update" (1.5.1) in the SU log simply indicate that you have downloaded it many times using software update and that the INSTALLER has been located in your "Utilities" folder, deuxglas.
They do NOT indicate that the firmware update itself has been installed. In fact they indicate that it hasn't. Once it has been installed you will no longer get these entries in the SU log. SU installs the installer, not the EFI Firmware itself.
To finish the process you now have to go to the Utilities folder and actually run the resulting application there called "MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update".
This is done as a safety measure. Firmware updates need to be installed with nothing else running, the computer hooked up to a power supply and require the following of the process without interruption by other things.
Cheers

Well, today was my turn. The last thing I did was install the security update 05/2008 yesterday before going to bed. Today in the morning the Black Screen of Death was already waiting for me.
I got an early SR MBP 15" 2.2. Bought mine in August 07 and had occasionally issues wih the computer not waking up from sleep. OF course the whole thing started with Leopard, Tiger was running flawlessly.
Anyway, I put the computer into target disk mode, and used a macbook of a friend to enable screen sharing. Now I can at least VNC into the machine. Out of the suggestions I have tried everything starting with clemons47 way then trying the various key combinations during boot (Resets..). I even drained the battery and let it cool down during the night. Nothing.
Since I am currently in smaller town in Sweden as an exchange student, all I can do here is to go to an apple authorized service provider. I got an appointment for Monday. But I guess it will be the same as for everyone: Logic Board replacement. What is really ******* me off is the fact that this replacement does not fix anything permanently. Seriously, if the thing is simply of bad quality Apple should replace it with a newer generation laptop where those problem does not occur. Everyone paid a huge amount of money for his MacBook Pro, it is not like I want a free upgrade, but simply a notebook that is worth the 2000 euro I paid for it.

Sorry my friend? What are you doing? Using Target disc mode, screen sharing, and VNC?
It is mighty hard to do these all at once, DJurczak!
Still I guess some people will say they've tried anything if it makes a good story!
And you don't want a new logic board either? Poor diddims!
Cheers
