MobileMe deleted all telephone numbers from my contacts in my iPhone
Posted: Sep 7, 2008 5:27 AM

I was just going to send my SO an SMS from my iPhone when I realized that the thread that I've been using for that had only her mobile phone number, not her name. Examining my contacts on the iPhone I found that her entry had only her name and a note. The other entries that I tested were also missing all other information. A mobile phone that can suddenly "forget" all telephone numbers, email addresses, etc. isn't very useful, especially when it doesn't warn you when it's going to forget! Worse yet, I'm on the road.

"Luckily" I brought one of the notebooks that's synchronizing with MobileMe along; the other is at home. The quotes around "luckily" mean, using my MacBook Pro I was able to solve the problem -- or, more exactly, alleviate the symptoms (only Apple can solve the problems that MobileMe has) -- by unregistering all computers syncing with my MobileMe account, deleting all data on the MobileMe cloud, reregistering the MacBook Pro and pushing all data to MobileMe. Of course, that means that the MacBook at home must be reregistered once I get home and all data pulled from the cloud.

I don't know how the contacts could have become so screwed up on the iPhone, but it surely was caused by MobileMe. I recall an error message during a MobileMe sync on the MacBook Pro last night saying that the sync info on MobileMe was inconsistent, and should be replaced by that on the MacBook Pro, which I did.

Since purchasing my iPhone about one month ago I must have "cleaned" the MobileMe cloud three or four times. MobileMe is obviously not "ready for prime time." Apple should really rethink the whole concept, perhaps making all or part of MobileMe Open Source. As MobileMe now is, I really must tote a laptop with the iPhone. There's no way to backup and restore synchronized information just on the iPhone. So, far from making me mobile, the iPhone tethers me to a laptop.

I have also had this happen TWICE to me. I no longer use Mobile Me because of it.

I had a similar problem - except in my case, all the contacts simply disappeared from my phone...

I was able to resolve the problem by turning off Contacts sync on the iPhone (Setings -> Mail,Contacts,Calendars -> abc@me.com -> Contacts), going to the home screen and then re-enabling it. All my lost contacts re-appeared.

This has happened to me twice also. I was camping this weekend and half of my contacts were missing and within the TEXTS, FAVORITES, and RECENT CALLS area it only showed phone numbers instead of names. I needed to make calls to people and I had no phone numbers.

Have had the same problem 2 times.

Disabling the contact sync and enableing it again helped the first time, but nok second time....

The only "lasting" solution seems to be "cloud cleaning." Make sure that at least one Mac (if you're synchronizing more than one with Mobile Me) has contacts, appointments, mail accounts, bookmarks, and whatever else you're synchronizing the way you want them to be in the Mobile Me cloud, and make sure you have local backups for them! Whenever you have to clean the cloud, unregister that Mac as soon as you discover something is foul, then unregister all others as well. This will prompt Mobile Me to ask whether you want to delete all the stuff on the cloud. Yes, you do. Then, check that the Mac that should have everything that you were synchronizing the way you want really does. If necessary, restore whatever got messed up from a local backup. Then register that Mac, and choose to overwrite Mobile Me. When the first sync is finished, reregister the other Macs, and choose to have Mobile Me overwrite them. Do this one Mac at a time, so that you can verify each initial sync. If you're syncing an iPhone, reregistering the Mac with the "truth" and syncing it with the cloud usually "restores" any missing info. Don't panic if before that everything that is being synced is erased. That should happen when you delete everything from the cloud.

Ditto. I gave it two tries during initial Mobileme set up on my iPhone and gave up turning the Mobileme sync functions off and USB synchronizing with my iMac to replace my iPhone data. My Mobileme data was intacted.

Yesterday September 24, 2008 I suddenly just had one phone number per cantacts... the 2nd and 3rd phone number and so on was gone. And still is gone.
The Web mobileme has all contact info...so they are not lost ..but thats does not help when to make a phonecall!

MobileMe has from time to time worked but mostly very unreliable. Lost all contacts a number of times... and even with network reset and contacts off retart and contacts on again it does not work.. Then suddenly they are all there.

Not found any successfull way to "Force" the mobileme to sync
