iTunes 8 Requires reboot each time it's run
Posted: Oct 4, 2008 8:58 AM

When opening iTunes, the Windows installer configures for about 5 seconds and then pops up a message saying

"You must restart your system for the configuration changes made to iTunes to take effect. Click Yes to restart now or No if you plan to restart later."

I've rebooted about 5 times over the course of the last 3 days with no difference. I've uninstalled iTunes and Quicktime and re-installed using the latest update from apple.

I should note that iTunes 8 did work at one point, but only once, and only immediately after the first install. I don't remember if it was 8.0 that worked/if it's 8.1 that's not.

Any ideas?

Helpful

Had the same problem. This is what I found from Alex of vistaheads.com:

Go to start menu --> run
Type 'regedit', press enter
Go to computer/hkey_classes_root/
find pcast and right click it
click permissions
during the course of this you may get a message that says "you can't change
anything, but you can change who can change things." click ok on it.
click advanced, then owner tab
change the owner from administrator to whatever name you are using
click ok twice to get out of the pop-ups completely
right click pcast again
click permissions
click OWNER RIGHTS
by 'full control' and 'read' click the allow boxes.
click ok

This worked for me every time. The annoying part is that you need to do it each time you update iTunes. I wish apple would fix this problem once and for all.

I figured that the problem is probably in the registry somewhere, I just had no idea where to start looking. Unfortunately, I'm still having the exact same problems, after editing that reg key as suggested.

I also tried re-enabling UAC, wondering if that has something to do with it, but still no dice. I've seen absolutely no difference in behavior from iTunes with any changes made.

I'd really love to continue using iTunes, but at this point it's completely and totally disabled on this PC.

Hunh....in a moment of curiosity, I went directly to the application in my Program Files (x86) folder and right clicked the .exe file > Run As Administrator and voila. Working iTunes. I then deleted all the different shortcuts I've been using and replaced them with new ones and I'm right as rain, at least for now.

Apparently, shortcuts created by windows trigger this problem, including the one that automatically shows up in the start menu, and the one automatically placed on the desktop. Creating a shortcut manually yields no issues.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

I've been banging my head on the desk over this since they released this update and this is the first thing I've tried that actually worked!

I also had the problem before this update of the installer running every time. Now iTunes opens, PING, for me.

Manually-created shortcuts worked for me too. Well done, you clever thing.

I've had this problem too and the last fix you suggested worked first time. Many thanks to 'yz250bmd', you saved me from going mad.
Come on Apple sort this out and if you can't do it, offer yz250bmd a job!
