Should I hit the cancel order button?
Posted: Oct 16, 2008 12:05 PM

I have been a PC user for years and thought I would try a Mac, so when the new Macbook Pro came out I jumped on the website and ordered one. I have a 17" Dell Inspiron now and have never really been happy with it. Then I started reading these posts and most of what I see are negative comments. I am starting to wonder if I made a mistake.

What worries you about your purchase? The MBP looks like a great machine.

A very small percentage of people don't like glossy screens and they are very vocal about it. That hasn't stopped many Apple stores from selling out of new MBs and MBPs. The vast majority of buyers don't care about matte vs glossy.

I'm more concerned about the quality of the LCD than the glossy coating or glass face. Check out this early review of the new notebooks.

Hi TomT100;

I concur with lenn. The negative responses that you are seeing always pop up whenever Apple does anything. You can't make everyone happy. There are bound to be some disgruntled people and they are generally the most vocal. Personally I think you will find the new Mac to be a leap forward over your PC.

I've been reading these forums for a long time, and I don't let the negative responses bother me too much. Unless you see thread with 700 replies about a long-standing problem, all of them saying "Yup, me too - it's broken," I think what shows up here is the small percentage of folks who have an issue. That's not to play down how serious the problem is for them. It's hugely disappointing to get a bum machine. But you have to think in percentages. I've owned 8 Macs in the last 20 years, and none of them ever came with a problem that meant I had to take it back to Apple. My wife had a bad screen on an iBook once that had to go back, but that got fixed and returned in 3 days.

If you're really worried, you can wait and see if pervasive problems start showing up here on the forums before you buy one, but keep in mind that "pervasive" is a pretty high threshold. If one or two, or even five people have a similar problem, that doesn't mean it's endemic to the whole product batch. When you start seeing hundreds, that's when it might give you pause.

Personally, I would say do not cancel.

I was one of the people with rare out of box defects, and after writing it here I got a personal phone call from Apple Inc to pursue the issue. They care, it's really refreshing! They watch the forums and everything.

Can Dell (or anyone) beat that? :-)
I think you'll be really happy. I offer no personal guarantee, but in my opinion the stability and performance is without compare.
Enjoy your new Mac!

Nicole, let me get this straight. You didn't contact Apple regarding your problem? You just posted here in the forums? Wow!

That small percentage happens to be about 50% of people who ordered the previous MBP with the matte screen because they are actual professionals who cannot use a glossy screen for correct color editing. So if you are not a pro, and do not plan to use the MBP for the purpose its name implies, then have no qualms about it and proceed with your order. If you are a professional, however, who needs a computer for actual "pro" things, then you already know enough not to buy the new MBP.

I bought a new MBP 2.53 today at it is an excellent machine. I, as always, performed a clean install of the OS before integrating the new system into my network. I have migrated files etc from my old MacBook Pro and all I can say is this machine is fantastic.

The trackpad is beautiful to use, the screen a joy to view, the keyboard a joy to use. The build quality is excellent, something I haven't said about the previous MacBook Pro which always felt a bit delicate to me.

Apple has come up trumps with this one. It is really fast and an excellent system.

You will not be disappointed with your choice

The matte screens on Apple notebooks will be over very soon. Jobs' said that after the show this week. No more matte screens. Get used to it folks.

I know a couple color "professionals" who have the last gen MBPs with a glossy screen and love it. To say that color "professionals" only buy matte displays is wrong.

In a couple years all "professional" OSX users wanting a new mac notebook will be buying ones with glossy screens.

That's incredible!

I guess all the people whining about the glossy screen can expect a call from Apple to ;-)

Great customer service, but it's a little creepy, too, though! Big Brother watching and all that.

If I'm posting here under a pseudonym (obviously, I am as my real name isn't "AstroMacMan"), I really don't want the company service people trolling the boards, digging up my log in information, and calling me at home. Seems an invasion of privacy to me. I'd rather have them wait for me to contact them than feel as if they're looking over my shoulder!

A better approach, that I've seen on the Tivo boards, is that someone official reposts to a poster with problems writing "Please contact me via a private message to trouble shoot this".

After posting my encouragement to you earlier, I went out last night and bought a new MBP 2.5. So I've had it for about 12 hours now. So far, no defects that I can see. Of course, 12 hours is no real test, but at least I can assure you that all my keys work, the screen is perfect, speakers work, optical drive works, etc.

My overall impression? I love the thing. It's hard to express what a difference the unibody construction makes. It makes it look so futuristic, really, with the lack of visible seams. And it feels solid like, well, a brick. Not heavy, mind you, but stiff and solid.

I know some folks hate the glossy screen, but not me. Does it over-saturate colors? I don't know. That's an argument for the graphic designers. All I can tell you is that it's immensely bright and clear. I'm writing this right now under a very bright light at the kitchen table, and I don't notice any glare at all. In fact, I worked on it for several hours very happily last night, and only then realized that the brightness was set out of the box at about 30%. I hadn't realized I had been using it all that time on such a low setting, because it was as bright as my old PB 12" on its HIGHEST setting. When I then turned it up, I was amazed. Super bright. Much better than any Apple notebook I've ever seen. The LCD backlight is doing its job, obviously.

So far, I'm very happy.

I was being a little sarcastic with my original question about cancelling my order after reading some negative posts about the new MBP. Before I decided to go from PC to Mac I asked alot of people about the change including my sister who has used Mac for years. I am sure I will love my new Mac when it arrives. The Dell I am using now has the glossy screen and I have to admit it took some getting used to. Everything seemed to be to bright even when I would turn down the brightness. If I had a choice I probably would have gone with a matte screen. I am hoping that with the newer technology it isnt as drastic as my Dell but even if it is I am used to it now. Although I am wearing glasses now.
