DNS Issues with Time Capsule - DNS Proxy periodically dies

hi all .... looking for some suggestions
I have a time capsule 1TB, connected to a linksys adsl modem in bridge mode, with the TC acting as DHCP server for my local clients. In the PPPoE settings I also enter the primary and secondary addresses for DNS that my ISP supplied.
I am able to successfully connect to the internet, and all clients successfully pick up an IP address, and each client picks up the TC as the DNS proxy. Everything works perfectly as it should.
Usually once per day, there seems to be a slight hickup with the internet connection (hard to tell whether I am losing the PPPoE or some other issue). When this happens, the PPPoE connection remains active, as I am able to access anything on the internet from an IP level. However, the DNS proxy service on the TC seems to die and as a result, all internet browsing fails. If I reboot the TC, everything comes back to normal. If I dont reboot, the only way to get browsing working is to manually enter the DNS IP address from ISP into the client PCs. However, this is a manual fix that I should not have to perform.
Looking for advice and guidance. Seems like a bug but I cant tell. If I was able to set the DHCP server to pass out the ISP supplied addresses that would also work, but I cant.

Make sure you have run Software Update for the latest Airport updates.
If the problem persists, you could do 2 things to help diagnose the problem:
1) enter DNS numbers for another provider other than your ISP (example - OpenDNS DNS numbers) - if problem does not occur, the problem is likely at your ISP's end
2) choose to obtain DNS addresses automatically - this will enable DNS addresses to be populated automatically by your ISP.
Good troubleshooting on your part to know that sites can be reached by IP address - thus problem should be related to DNS. FYI - my TC has had DNS functioning perfectly using OpenDNS DNS server addresses (rather than my ISP's) since the TC was introduced.

thanks for the reply ...
Its interesting because the dns ip addresses that the wan link picks up automatically differ from what the isp provides over the phone.
When this periodic problem hits, TC reports a problem initially. Usually I just overide and reboot manually. Today I allowed the TC to fix the problem, and when i checked the config afterwards, it removed the 2 dns entries I had entered manually. ie your option 2. So will monitor this to see whether this resolves the problem.
Thanks

I have exactly the same issue with our brand new TimeCapsule. I tried entering DNS information provided by my ISP (Earthlink) but these are not propagated to DHCP clients, on the IP address of the TC is.
I use the TC in PPOE mode, and every few hours, the DNS proxy of the TC stops resolving addresses. I have tried to switch around the connection type from "Always On" to "Automatic/Never" but this does not seem to solve the problem. I have also changed the duration of the lease of DHCP addresses, no impact either. Restarting the TC is the only solution.
I am running software update and currently have firmware version 7.3.1 up on the TC.
Has anyone experienced this problem in the past and fixed it by having the TC replaced?

I have the same problem too, less frequent: about once every 10 days.
For the records I have Verizon and I don't want to use the DNS provided from the DHCP because of Verizon's policy. Putting statically DNS IPs on it didn't change the problem. I guess we have to wait for the next firmware update...

Hi, I have exactly the same problem. My setup is a Linksys AM200 set to bridge mode and a 500GB Time Capsule. I love in London UK and connect to Plus.net over ADSL and after a few hours I lose all DNS and I have to add the DNS to my clients manually.
I have also tried to add the openDNS ip addresses into the Time Capsule, this works fine for a few hours, then no DNS again. Downgrading the firmware also makes no difference.
It's really driving me crazy and I have searched here and the Internet and it seems to be quite a big problem.
Apple can you fix this please! Or I am going to have to take the Time Capsule back to Regents Street Apple Store and try for a new one.
Thanks for any help

Just got off the phone with support for this very same problem. DNS Proxy is definitely dying in the TC, looks like a firmware issue to me.
This is the 3rd TC I'm on. First was a 500GB, had this problem, replaced it under warranty at Apple's direction, replacement did the same, just upgraded this weekend to 1GB, and same issue still. All on 7.3.2 firmware.
TC 1TB, PPPoE to my ISP, ISP's DNS Servers listed in the PPPoE config in the TC.
When a host gets DHCP from the TC the only DNS returned is the TC itself, since it proxies the ISP DNS servers.
Once every day or two, the DNS proxy dies. local network works, and I can add my ISP's DNS addresses in my host config and I have DNS again, but this is definitely something dying in the DNS proxy in the TC.
Just for kicks trying to switch from my ISP's DNS servers to OpenDNS now since someone said that worked for them, but I am not hopeful... I don't see this as a host DNS issues at all.
The dead proxy is very clear:
$ nslookup apple.com. 192.168.1.1 # that's the TC
Server: 192.168.1.1
Address: 192.168.1.1#53
-
- server can't find apple.com: SERVFAIL
$ nslookup apple.com. 208.67.222.222 # that's OpenDNS
Server: 208.67.222.222
Address: 208.67.222.222#53
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: apple.com
Address: 17.149.160.49
I replaced a linksys router with the TC and am kind of unhappy that a $500 router dies every couple of days. My cheapo Linksys router never needed to be restarted, it only ever got rebooted once every year or so when the house lost power long enough for the UPS to run out of battery.
Help us out here Apple, I replaced a $50 router with a $500 because I like the flavor of your kool aid, and this thing dies every day or two. Even if you can't fix why the proxy is dying every couple of days, can you please at least update the firmware to maybe restart the proxy if it quits working?

Hmm. Just happened again. Oddly went about 10 days without a DNS proxy failure, which is way longer than I'm used to, but last night it died again:
$ nslookup apple.com.
Server: 192.168.1.1
Address: 192.168.1.1#53
-
- server can't find apple.com: SERVFAIL
$ nslookup apple.com. 208.67.222.222
Server: 208.67.222.222
Address: 208.67.222.222#53

Definitely in the TC DNS proxy, has to be. Rebooting the TC (as always) fixes it.

I just ran into this issue, very frustrating. I found putting the opendns.org dns servers directly into the airport DNS for my laptop, things sped back up.

I have had a similar problem for quite some time now. I use Open DNS for my DNS servers instead of the Charter DNS servers because they are much faster at resolving the address. Periodically the Time Capsule reverts to the Charter default DNS settings and I have to manually re-enter the Open DNS IPs. The culprit in my case seems to be a reboot of the system. I looked at my settings this morning and they had reverted, but I think the cause this time may have been because I put the system to sleep all day Saturday while I was gone. Lookups were a bit sluggish on Sunday, but I did not think to check until this morning.
To summarize, the problem only seems to occur after shutting down, rebooting or putting the system to sleep. I usually don't remember to check until some time later, but those events seem to be the trigger. Can anyone else confirm this?

Similar problem. Has occurred since I received my Time Capsule and started using OpenDNS. Have talked extensively with Apple Care. When using OpenDNS I lose internet access every 4 to 7 days. No fix. Apple care fixed the problem by instructing me to go back to my Windstream isp DNS server. That surprisingly fixed the problem. But I still need to use OpenDNS so I restart my TC every 4 to 7 days. Frustrating. I had no problem with my previous Linksys router. Was hoping that I'd be happy with the new TC. Next time I'll stay with Linksys. As a side note I lost WiFi range as well. I thought "N" would increase range, but it didn't. Had more range with the Linksys and g standard. Tested thoroughly with both routers side by side. Oh well...expensive lesson.

I do not lose internet connectivity. TC just seems to forget the DNS settings and from what I can determine it seems to occur after a restarting or putting the system to sleep. Apple can say what they want, but it is most definitely an Airport problem. Once you change the settings and save them out they should be remembered when you do a restart.
That is no fix, that is pure BS. That is just a means to keep them from having to fix a real problem. If they had to surf using the Charter DNS servers they would change their tune in a hurry. I have helped a number of people change from Charter DNS to OpenDNS and every one of them have been amazed at how much faster lookups are under OpenDNS.

I have exactly same problem. DNS dies. People were talking about setups. but for me it doesn't work at all. I use TC in off bridge mode. any other setup doesn't work.
I posted a website with my setup. Does anyone have a time to check it out and compare setups if there is something wrong??
http://www.regardit.eu/Site/tcsetup.html
problems I experiencing.
DNS problem
Any other setups than Off bridge mode are failing.
BTMM doesn't work at all
Ichat never able to have a talk, camera and screen sharing.
Is that all because of TC??

I'm having the same exact issue with my Airport Extreme (gigabit) v7.3.2. It happened yesterday at about noon. The only way to resolve it was to restart the airport. It then happened again today at about the same time. The symptoms are that the DNS proxy suddenly stops working. I, too, am configuring it to use the OpenDNS servers. Behold:
whitecloak:etc root# nslookup

Default server: 10.0.7.1
Address: 10.0.7.1#53
