This unit is dead on arrival if the trackpad does not work correctly.

I just switched to faster graphics in the Energy Saver preferences. It might be my imagination, but It's been close to half an hour without any trackpad related issues.

It is NOT your imagination my friend. I've just switched to faster graphics just like you did & I don't experience any problems with the trackpad at all. Very strange but thank you that was at least a solution seems to be working for now. Thank you.
(anyone tried this? please respond to the topic if you have or have not any problems anymore)

I invite all to try something. It's not a fix, but it might get to the heart of the issue.
For a short time, try using your Mac in a slightly different way. Every time you need to click the mouse, lift your hands away, and smartly tap the trackpad in the center bottom with JUST THE TIP of your pointer finger.
Does that make it better?
I'm getting 100% click accuracy that way.
I think this might have something to do with a spread-out side of the thumb (the way I typically click) faking out the trackpad to think you're using multiple fingers.
I'd be interested to hear comments.

It seems OK that way too but it's not efficient! We all used to click while our palms are at rest or touching the trackpad. moving hands away and clicking is a waste of time for me. I'm producing music; and clicking the way that you've told is very inefficient for me bec. I'm losing the time that I need to scroll to.. When I move my hand away the time goes back to where-ever it was, definitely not to the new place..

Having the same problem..i went from a early 2008 MBP to a the late 2008 one....Never used the migration assistant I think? I used my time machine backup from the original MBP and restored it to the new one.

Oh -- I agree completely. It is BAD. But at least now I think we may know why.
It's not a mechanical switch problem; it's a software problem (or perhaps firmware), and that can be fixed.

I am having the frozen cursor and missed clicks on my new Pro trackpad as well. I cannot find a setting in Preferences labeled "Faster Graphics." I found one named "Higher Performance" next to the Graphics preference but I already had this choice selected. The only other choice is Better Battery Life. Am I in the right place? I was so excited that it sounded like two of you had a solution. This is very annoying. Thanks.

Better performance is the same as the faster graphics. This is the selection that turns on the separate, much more powerful graphics chip.

I have to say, I am hugely disappointed with the trackpad on the new MacBook Pros.
I have a variety of issues:
1) Mouse pointer freezes regularly. I have to wait for it to unfreeze or lift my finger off the trackpad.
2) Clicking the trackpad does not result in a click event registering with the OS. Some people in this thread have reported 25% of their clicks are unrecognized--I would say my percentage is higher.
3)Inconsistent secondary clicks. Perhaps it's related to item 2 above, but I find that my secondary clicks are often not recognized or are recognized as primary clicks.
I was a Mac user since the original Mac days then switched to Windows and finally Linux; this is my first Mac in many years. I bought a Mac because I was tired of hardware inconsistencies and various OS problems I had on other systems; I wanted a computer that "just works."
Well, I have to say , I am quite of disappointed.
I would say that this is a case of a product that should not have shipped until the bugs were worked out.

I'd hate to think how much USER ERROR is playing a role in all these posts. The TrackPad is awesome. New gestures need getting use to but a day after owning mine I was there.
Yes the cursor gets lost and sticks sometimes but a firmware or software update for the trackpad will fix that in due time.
Let's just say that's it not causing me that much inconvenience that I have to complain about it.

I did a migration and found my trackpad messed up as well. No scrolling.
Any solutions or workarounds? I have a LOT of apps, and settings, I would hate to have to install and update from scratch. I updated from a 1.25 powerbook.
