Greetings,

Sorry folks, I'm not seeing this - I sent a photo to myself, it displayed about 5x7 inches, in the email, and I saved it to iPhoto, and then back to the phone. It still looks clear and sharp.

I must be missing something here. I have sent many photos from iPhoto to the phone, and none of them are bad in any way.

I sent that same photo to a friend and it was sharp and clear.

Cheers,
M.

Greetings,

You are correct - I sent it to myself and saved it from the email on the phone, and it was very soft. That's not too good - time to bring it up to the folks that can fix it.

Cheers,
M.

amazing, i called AT&T (611) to report the problem.
The first tier had never heard of it, so after 15 minutes, i got bumped to apple. There a very nice gentleman helped me, but he had never heard of this issue either, he promised to forward the issue to the tech group.

so, after 47 minutes on the phone, i reported the problem.

I would suggest/request that everyone concerned about this problem make the call, even to simply say you have a problem.

Obviously, the message is not yet getting through to the support desk which makes me fear that a corrective update is not imminent.

really wish i could revert back to 2.1 (without jailbreaking)
it amazes me that we cant easily revert to previous releases.

the problem seems to be related to the size of the photo being saved from email
I emailed myself 2 images and then saved them from iphone email.
the first, 1600 (wide) x 1200 (tall) was blurry
the second, 1602x1202 was NOT blurry

I got the hint from the appstore description of the camerabag app
from Nevercenter Ltd.
they are claiming 2.2 has issues with images that are 400,800, and 1200 wide
i agree ...

I did verify that if these same pictures are sync'ed from a PC to the iphone,
they will both display clear on the iphone.

next up, find an app that lets me resize photos in my camera roll and check
whether or not it can "correct" a blurry image,

i am not that hopeful since if you try to email a "blurry" photo in the camera roll from the iphone, it only sends a 90x120 thumbnail instead of the full resolution image. Must be something in the API which accesses the photo from the camera roll. My guess is the same API is used by iphone to display the photo and to email the photo.

but ...
what is different about photos which are sync'ed into the iphone or taken with the iphone camera. something in the embedded data, some flag ??

I also noticed this with 2.1 also but I figured the resolution of the images I was attempting to save was just too high and since I wasn't using itunes to "optimize" but saving directly from Safari it was not able to display them... Although, I remember back in 1.1.4 and even 2.0.1 that you could just keep the photo in the viewer and sometimes it would display the image eventually in full res glory. This is not the case with 2.2. All of my Camera Roll is useless, even photos I took with the iphone from a previous restore will not display! This is really making me groan at every single apple update. They fix one thing that no one really cares about and completely destroy the devices usage for 80% of the fanbase. I filed a report with apple and will call in today as well. Also I am having the "failure to connect to cellular network" with data connections AND the screen auto brightness issue.

Any update will have to come from Apple, not AT&T.

I have left feedback and I suggest everyone experiencing this do the same. It's the only way to get this resolved. There seems to be no work around short of going to your computer and syncing any photos you receive to the iPhone, which isn't much of a workaround at all.

Count me among those that are NOT seeing this bug at all. I have tried to see it. I have even resized photos in Photoshop to match what people are saying. I then email the photo to myself, save it to teh Camera Roll and open it there. It looks just fine. No blurring at all.

Does anyone have a theory as to why some see this and others do not?

Are you running the same build? 2.2(5G77)?

this is a bug from 2.2 .. it is not just saved photos but any photo taken iwth a camera app other than the stock iphoen camera app will blur and distort any picture greater than 800x600

apple should release a bug fix for this because it *****.. i like to look at pictures i take on my iphone not wait to get home too see how they came out.. hopefully i can just ssh into my phone and fix the prob if its a file..

I saw this bug with 2.1, but only with emailed pictures captured on a non-iphone camera. They were larger pictures, and the resolution, when saved from email, looked like a scaled-up thumbnail.
Apparently, this problem has now been extended to iPhone photos as well (I am also having this problem with iPhone pictures from friends under version 2.2).
My work around has been to save the pictures to iPhoto then load them back onto the iPhone, but it seems like it defeats the purpose of the iPhone camera.

You are correct on this:

1) The camera resolution is 1600x1200.
You can copy them off in full resolution to your computer.

2) Emailed photos get gratuitously scaled down to 800x600.
Precisely who asked for that?

3) Inbound pictures in email seem to arrive intact (provided they were emailed
from something other than the iphone. They can be saved on the iphone in
full resolution.

However, then I discovered something else:

4) Photos which were less than 800x600 when mailed to the iphone
get STORED on the iphone with the proper size, AND the EXIF info
matches the pictures ACTUAL dimensions.

BUT

5) Photos that were less than 800x600 when mailed FROM the iphone
arrive with the EXIF info saying 800x600 EVEN when the actual
picture is quite small.

Sample: Mailed form iPhone: 264x195 actual size, Exif claims: 800x591

I believe the Iphone is corrupting the EXIF info, and even though
that info does not cause a competent image manipulation program from
properly handling the image, I believe it DOES affect how the iphone
handles the image when it sends it. It tries to scale up to the bogus
Exif size, which results in blurry grainy photos. A couple
round trips, and the photo is hopelessly corrupted.

The bug therefore is improper setting of Exif info upon mailing.
This bug happens even with 2.1, and I believe 2.2 is simply compounding
this problem by rendering it at the Exif size rather than the actual size,
which differs from what 2.1 does.

Nice detective work! So this would be a considerably easy fix to be made by Cr'Apple since even 2.0 retained the EXIF data correctly.

The more I look at it the more it looks like just a programming bug.

EXIF info is strictly for documentation purposes. Used for carrying Fstop, Focal length, Camera model, copyright etc. Nobody I know takes it seriously because it is so easy to fake, and every photo edit package clobbers it.

It looks like someone grabbed the wrong set of values when doing some image manipulation in the iphone. Not the kind of mistake you expect from a graphics oriented company like Apple.

The question is why did they make any changes in this area? Was it on the list of things fixed in 2.2? Is it in preparation for adding MMS or cut and paste?
