Time Machine saved my life!

I just wanted to share this bit of information and the importance of backing up your computer. Out of the blue today my MacBook's hard drive crashed. I have been using TM and was concerned, but not too much. I went down to the store today, bought a new hard drive. Installed it and used time machine to recover everything. In one hour, my MacBook was back in working order with my new hard drive. No problems and everything works as advertised. If you're not using Time Machine to backup your computer, don't wait. Get and external hard drive or Time Capsule and back it up.

jharston has the best advice that you will see on this forum if your computer data has any value to you!!
A backup onto another hard drive, whether time Machine or CCC or super Duper (for those not using Leopard), is the most important investment you can put into your computer. It amazes me how many people lose everything due to only having it on one drive and the thought of having a backup of that single drive had never occurred to them.

Jharston, for the benefit of the forums ... can you semi-detail the steps you did to recover your Macbook? (You said you installed a new hard drive into the Macbook, what did you do then?) Did you have to install OS X again, or simply boot from an OS X DVD?
Thank you for the info!

When you re-install OSX from the DVD, one of the options is to restore from a TM backup. Make sure the external HD is connected, choose this option and watch the magic happen. It really couldn't be easier. I've done it a few times now with 100% success each time.

Sure. First obviously, swap out hard drives. Insert the DVD install disk and start computer. I then discovered that I needed to use Disk Utility for format the HD. I then restarted the computer again. Then I used the "recover" option. It calculated the space you need and then you select the destination drive. Simple as that. Granted I only had about 45G of data on my computer, so it only took about an hour to complete. You will find that you will have to re-sync everything with MobileMe if you use that. Also you will have to reauthorize your computer with iTunes and resync your iPod. Not really much else to do. Everything transfered over including settings.

Hi jharston,
Your story is truly inspiring and I think everyone should follow your advice and start backing up as soon as possible. There's always that irrepleacable family photo, or a funny video made at a party that gets lost when a hard drive crashes. I just wanted to ask, did you have such files on your hard drive when it crashed? In other words, were you able to salvage truly memorable moments, or other files that you couldn't get your hands on again (at least not that easy)?
Thanks!

I would like to add that I learned it the hard way. Lost my project that I had been working on along with all my class notes only a week before exams
TM couldn't be simpler to use, back it up while you can.
Cheers,
Arun

Everything was replaced. All photos, videos and music. Some of those pictures and videos were very important to me and was glad I had a backup.

I've got a LaCie network drive which I use to back up several laptops, PC and Mac. Unfortunately, Time Machine doesn't work with a network drive

I really wasn't all that diligent in attaching my external drive and doing backups on my MacBook when I first got it a little over a year ago. But when the Time Capsule was released I purchased it and have been doing backups ever since. I purchased the new MacBook about a month ago now and when I first booted up it asked if I wanted to restore from a Time Machine backup and so I used that option and it set everything up just like my prior MacBook. It took quite a while because I had a lot of information on it but it worked flawlessly.
I have had one experience that saved my butt with an assignment in a class I was taking where I accidentally overwrote an important file. I panicked at first but then remembered Time Machine and accessed the most recent backup, restored, and I was all set. I found it funny afterwards how quickly I panicked because Time Machine is just working in the background without having to really worry about anything.

It's also good practice to periodically back up to removable media such as CD / DVD and store that in a safe place. Probably not as often as TM but once a month is worth it. That way you have every chance of being safe from just about every possibility. To be TOTALLY safe for very important data then use an online storage facility but I agree, for most TM is a fantastic piece of software.
