Hi,
I have the following Problem on one machine in the Office:
A Macbook Pro with 10.5.5 has no drag and drop and copy and paste functionality anymore.. Neither u can "grab" and move any files...
Until now I tried the following:
Reinstalled OSXCOmbo 10.5.5 three timnes > no success
Added a new User and tried with this user > no success
Booted into safe mode > no success
The Last thing the user installed was a "HP director" printer driver and suite. I've deinstalled it already > no success
I pretty much at end with my ideas.. Does anybody have any experience with this prob? There are a few posts on the net, but with no real solution...

Hello bossy:
You might try trashing a preference file and restarting (com.apple.finder.plist).

Done.. no success..
Also I can't mount apps from Images!! Error Code (-10822). Thank god for time machine, or I wouldn't be able to even use Superduper for backup...
It seems that a clean Install is the only Solution, or??

Hi again:
If you mean by "clean install" an erase and install, I would definitely not do that. I usually suggest an archive and install - safer, IMHO.

I've read some discussions, where archive and install wouldn't help!!!
Prefs and stuff are kept!! So it makes no sense...

Hi Bossy;
I have the same problem on two of my machines. One, however does allow copy and paste, just not drag-and-drop. And it’s only in certain areas, i.e. I can drag and drop icons in the Finder in Icon view, but not in List or Column view. Also, I can drag and drop text from Safari, but not from BBEdit (but I can drag and drop to BBEdit). Possibly unrelated: sometimes, after restarting, all drag-and-drop works, but at a certain point, it does cease working, at the same time that Photoshop CS4 stops updating when drawing on the image window (you have to zoom in/out to see what you’ve changed—which makes Photoshop CS4 just about completely unusable at that point).

I'm in the same boat. Hit me out of the blue tonight. I can't find any workable solution. I've tried everything except rebuilding from scratch, which is not a viable option at the moment.

The same vexing problem of loss of drag-and-drop and cut-and-paste just occurred out of the blue on my wife's iBook G4 (1.42 GHz) running OSX 10.5.5. The only recent software addition was the addition of HP Photosmart C7200 software a week or so ago. I noted that an earlier poster mentioned HP software so I wonder if there is a small clue here. Permissions have been repaired, disk verified, and the HP software removed, all with no change.

I forgot to indicate that I have two other computers -- notably both running OS X 10.4.11, however -- that are running the HP Photosmart software with no problem.

Glad to hear (see) that I'm not the only one. No cut/paste, no drag and drop ... No fix?

No, it will create a brand new shiny system folder alongside your old one. Worth a shot.

Has anyone found a solution yet? I've also tried the steps above with no success.

I did solve it ...
Back up everything ...
Boot up your install disc like you're going to re-install the whole system ... but do a archive install... this saved all my stuff and erased the issue ...
but as always ... back up. My back up is time machine ...

Re: Unable to copy/paste, drag/drop files, folders and texts

I had this problem some months ago. I tracked down the cause to the process "pboard", which you can locate in your Activity Monitor. This presumably is the pasteboard/drag and drop engine. Force quitting this, even though it immediately re-launches, resulted in a return of the copy and paste etc.
However in the long term the only solution I could find was a re-install of the system. However in the meantime you should be able to work.
