iPhone backlight will not come on in a dark room

I purchased the iPhone 3G a little over 2 weeks ago. I'm having a problem with the backlight. Whenever I am in a room with very little or no light, the iPhone will work fine until it locks itself or I lock it. At that point, I can bring up the "lock screen" and it looks fine (has backlight), but when i slide to unlock it the backlight goes off. Locking it again allows me to see a perfectly bright and viewable lock screen, but as soon as I unlock it we are back to a black screen. If i hold it up to a lightsource, I can see that the home screen is up but there is just no backlight at all (as if the proximity sensor is activated outside of a call). Now, as long as there is a decent amount of ambient light in the room, this does not happen. When the issue is occuring, turning on a lightsource in the room and then locking/unlocking resolves it. Note that this ONLY occurs when the auto-brightness feature is on. If I turn off auto-brightness, this problem never occurs
It is as if the auto-brightness feature activites the proximity sensor when the ambient light sensor detects no light!
At first I thought it might be from the Power Support Crystal Film I installed on the screen, but I have since removed it and the problem still happens. This keeps me from using the phone in bed unless the lamp is on, or using it in the car at night unless I turn on the overhead light every time I need to unlock it.
Do I need to return this phone?

Seen a few mention it...but all say if you go turn off auto...then slide it around a bit, then turn it back on. That fixes it. Just needs to move on the slide a bit to reset itself. Others say once done, it doesn't happen again.

So I need to turn off auto-brightness, slide the brightness bar up and down a few times, and then turn it back on?
I've toggled auto-brightness several times, but never moved the slider very far either direction. I'll try that tonight when its dark enough to test.

okay I was able to test this by covering the sensor with my thumb while messing with the settings. While covering the sensor with my thumb (and therefore getting no backlight) I was able to get a bright enough external light on the screen to still navigate it. I went into Brightness Settings while the backlight problem was occuring and messed with the slider. Moving the slider along the entire range, I see that the backlight stays off until getting to the halfway point of the bar, at which point moving the bar up starts increasing the backlight...so it looks like the entire brightness range is contained within the right half of the slider bar (however, with my thumb off the sensor and the phone working normally, this is not the case, it then scales properly). I tried placing the slider at various places along the bar (leaving auto-brightness on ,mind you) but none of them do anything to alleviate the issue.

Have you tried turning the iPhone off (hold sleep until 'power off' red bar shows) and then restart it?

You may have a defect on your iPhone and ask AT&T for a replacement.
Try restoring your iPhone first as a clean restore and see if that works first.

I second the comment about the defect in the iPhone-take it to the nearest Apple store and they will replace it. They did for me.
I had the EXACT same problem--whenever I was in low light, I would have no backlight. After playing with the phone for a while, I found that if I moved the brightness slider to about 20% the backlight turned completely off; hence, whenever the phone tried to be dim (in this 20% range) it just turned off instead. I had the benefit of being able to compare this with my wife and friend's iPhones, which did not behave this way--on a normal iPhone, sliding the brightness to 0% still produces some backlight.
I tried rebooting, restoring, you name it... didn't help. I called support and although friendly didn't help very much (just said all iPhones displays are a little different). When I took it to the Apple store, the technician played with it a little and almost immediately decided it needed to be replaced.
