After I repaired permissions, I ran verify permission again.
This is what I got.

ACL found but not expected on "private/var".
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/OwnerGroupTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.

Hello, everyone! After some searching, it turns out the download was only partially complete when the installation process began, resulting in the hang. I deleted the partially downloaded file and then went to the Apple site and downloaded the Combo installer, not going through Software Update. It took about 4 or 5 hours to download, but installed without a hitch.

Thanks for your help!

Typical: Probably 95% of problems stem from Apple's BAD INFORMATION DESIGN

Like many users here, after hours wasted trying to get the "Software Update" install process to work -- only to have the installation hang for 30 minutes or longer -- I finally downloaded the standalone installer (the regular one, not the combo)...

(this one: the 372 MB file --
http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_6_Update )

As with most people who have reported back here to this thread, running THAT installer worked fine, no snags, took about I would say 5 minutes to install, the status bar moving rapidly along until the green arrow and UPDATE SUCCESSFUL! ...

Another fine example of BAD USABILITY DESIGN:

All Apple would have to have done was simply say (with the same elegance and simplicity as their marketing team understands how to talk to consumers):

"PLEASE NOTE: This update takes longer than most of the usual Software Updates, so plan 30 minutes to an hour before you begin. The process occurs in two parts, so just follow the on-screen prompts. During Part 1, a large installer file (between 300 MB and 700 MB) first downloads to your computer before the automatic installation can begin. If you are on a broadband connection, this could take about 30 minutes for the initial download.

The download progress bar will let you know how far along the download has proceeded. (*Note to Apple:* It would have been very easy for you to then have a separate progress-bar just indicating the status of the installer downloading, vs having one combined Installation status bar that hangs for 30 minutes or more while an unusually large file downloads, giving the appearance that the installation process is stuck. Then a new progress bar would inform users that the file was successfully downloaded and now it is being installed automatically)

It's astounding to me how many times a common problem turns out to be less about engineering, and more about simple communication.

What Apple ALSO could have done is say: "We recommend you perform this update in two parts. First, download the large updater file. Then, when it is completed, follow the prompt and double click on the installer file to have it begin its automatic installation process, just as you would do if you were installing a new piece of software."

But no, now there will be probably 200 new redundant threads started all because Apple can't figure it out to inform users how to approach this major installation.

I've been using Macs since the SE in 1986 -- and this snagged me. I can only imagine what is happening at home for my elderly parents using the Macbook we gave them last year. I can only hope my Dad did what he USUALLY does when periodically ominous notes appear about downloading software: he ignores them, or turns off the computer and calls me. That would waste less time than I just wasted for no reason.

RECAP: (1) Download the standalone installer. (2) Double-click the downloaded file and installation should proceed normally.

I wouldn't say the manual installer worked with no snags.

My MBP still required a hard reset to complete the upgrade.

And I don't have Aperture, which others seemed to believe is the culprit.

30 minutes did NOT do the trick. Each time I tried upgrading, I let the MBP sit in a stalled state for over an hour before crashing the box.

I will say, though, that this is only the second installer in over 15 years with Apple (I started around Classic 8.4 or 8.5) that has ever given me trouble. About 5 years ago I had a major problem caused when I picked up an installer by chance within minutes of it being released. A day's worth of tech calls led me to a VERY qualified support agent who was one of the few people familiar with a rare procedure used to bring my box back in service. (I was the fourth person to have required this procedure, apparently). So this issue is hardly a pattern.

good point, re my overstatement of the simplicity of running the standalone installer. I was, like many here, frustrated by the recklessness of Apple even allowing such a major update to be handled by automated Software Update.

They ought to review their QA procedures and perhaps learn that they do a disservice to customers when they promise automation for really significant things like this --- vs. using the same kind of very clear, user-friendly communication they excel at on the Sales Marketing side of the company -- to instruct people on how to perform the software update by (a) downloading file xxx, then (b) once it's done downloading to computer, double-clicking on that file to launch the installer.

And, as it turns out, though my use of the "regular" installer, vs the Combo, worked fine for me after series of failures with auto Software Update, several experienced users here in this forum strongly suggested always using the Combo Updater for these major operating system updates.

Which is what I will now do, to be on safer side.

It worked for me, but considering the screen flash all the time. I suggest to use the link http://support.apple.com/downloads/DL752/MacOSXUpd10.5.6.dmg and get the files directly.

One additional information, the boot screen after re-apply the update keep with the cross line on the top and the apple logo has a mirror below.
