Deleting the account in the iPhone and adding it again now sets the delete flag (shows as striked out in outlook or webmail), but does not purge it.
So I still have two copies (one in my Trash, and the other in the Inbox).
This is annoying as it means I need to delete emails twice.

The annoying part for myself is that I don't actually connect up to this email account using IMAP on my computer. I use exchange. I ONLY use IMAP on my iPhone. Otherwise, I could use the workaround given above to have outlook/imap auto purge items marked for deletion. Either way, it's an ugly workaround, even if I could do it.
Anybody hear anything from Apple on this issue?

Bump! I have the same issue. I have 2 Exchange accounts, one that I use for business is set up as an Exchange account on the iPhone, but since you can only have one, my personal account which is also hosted on a different Exchange service is set up as IMAP. Every item I try to move, just gets duplicated back on the server. I don't remember this behavior when I first got the phone. It's been upgraded to 2.2, but I still have the problem.

Deleted messages are copied to deleted folder, but remain in the inbox on outlook. Annoying!

THe problem is not iPhone related, but it's an "issue" with exchange IMAP. In fact it's not a real issue, just a somewhat non-standard behaviour.
The solution is just to instruct the client to issue the EXPUNGE imap command after a "delete" command, or a "move" (that should be a copy+delete).
I had the exact same problem with Thunderbird, and I resolved with a (somewhat hidden) option that do exactly that.
How to do that on iPhone, alas, I don't know, but I guess that knowing which the problem is can help

The problem IS iPhone related, since the iPhone does not issue the Expunge command, no matter what IMAP server is used in the back-end.
The easy solution would be to have the same behavior a Mail.app, give the option to select an action on deleting an email (hint-hint: default option, move to Trash folder).

Bump! Any solutions out there on this?
Everything seems to indicate this is an iPhone issue because the OS or mail.app don't issue an "expunge" command. I could swear this worked on iPhone OS 2.0but I don't want to downgrade just to find out.
