Why do my iMacs start up with a dimmed screen?

I'm a SysAdmin for a tertiary institution and we have only just upgraded our iMac labs to Leopard.
I'm trying to resolve a problem that seems to have cropped up a few times on these boards about the iMac screens being set to minimum brightness when booting at the start of each day.
Previous, unresolved yet archived threads:

I can reset them to full brightness using the keyboards, but this can get tedious with over 100 machines scattered over the campus.
So has anybody found a resolution to this issue yet? I just know I am going to get asked about it once the students start back!!

OR another question, how come I seem to have 2 user names for 1 login.
So nobody else has this problem, or nobody else has an answer?

I have the exact opposite problem on my new iMac at work. I just got it about a week ago; every time I restart, the brightness resets to maximum. And since I feel like I'm going blind even from it being all the way down, having it start up at full power is extremely annoying. I'd rather have your problem.

So basically the 'real' problem is why isn't the machine keeping whatever setting the brightness has been set at.
This is going to become a major issue next week when we have photography students start back and they need to have specific colour profiles based on specific screen brightness.
They won't want to be going through the hassle of loading their profiles each time they log in.

I have this problem as well (maximum brightness after restart). On min brightness it feels like my eyes are being burnt out of their sockets so would be useful it it retained the settings. In my case I am using the new iMac in a dual screen config and the secondary screens brightness is correct on restart. Both screens are calibrated using an EyeOne device.
