ipod touch loses wifi settings
Posted: Dec 29, 2008 6:52 PM

hi

i recently got an ipod touch and have had some problems with my wifi connection at home. we do not broadcast our ssid so the touch does not detect the network but i am able to enter the ssid and WPA key manually and join the network without a problem. my problem is that i frequently lose the connection, especially when i power the touch down. i wouldn't mind having to re-enter the password to rejoin the network except that the touch completely loses the fact that i created a manual or "other" entry for my network. this means that i have to re-enter the ssid, select WPA and then enter the password each time i lose the connection. is it normal for the touch to "forget" a manual entry? this is very annoying and seems like odd behavior since most operating systems allow you to retain information about network connections that you have connected to previously even if that connection in not currently available

thanks for any insight you can provide

I have the same set up with my wi-fi router and I have the same problem you are describing with my 2G Touch. There doesn't seem to be a real fix for this problem yet.

do you know if there is a bug board i can post to or check or do the forums serve that purpose? i know that this is how users try to help each other, i'm just not sure if apple regularly checks to see if there are things they need to address

thanks

I bought 2 (32gig) ipod touches last week and have a strange problem with the wif fi dropping out. One of the ipod's works perfectly with great range and little drop out, the other identical ipod touch continuously drops the wireless signal and I keep having to log on constantly, which is a real pain as I am using the ipod for home automation and media control. Has anyone any ideas here please ?

I have had my 2nd Gen ipod touch (32Gig). I set it up on my wireless network which does not broadcast its SSID and is 128 bit WEP (yeh yeh I know weak) encrypted. This makes for quite a daunting task when forced to type in the WEP key every time the ipod 'forgets' this access points settings.

However I did discover what seems like a quick work-around. I entered the SSID, chose WEP, and for the pass i just entered a bunch of random chars. It said wrong password then connected up to my network fine with the old profile that it appeared to have lost. Not sure if just entering the SSID brought it back to life or not, but it's better than having to manually enter those huge encryption keys.

wish i would have known that earlier. originally i had a very long encryption key but after i had to re-enter it for the 5th time i went and changed it to a much shorter key.

Hey Myles T, thanks a lot for the insight! I just tried your method on my iPod touch 2G and it works!

Here's my current configuration: SSID not broadcasted, security is set to WPA2, password quite long with a lot of jumbled characters

Here's what I did to fix: key in the actual SSID, select WEP for security, type in something random as password and voila!

I'll write about this in my web site at http://www.onemoretap.com and hope others will eventually find it useful...

Now, I wonder if this affects iPhone users as well... ;)

Your touch is unlikely to remember networks that do not broadcast SSID. If you think masking your network name is going to provide security, I can assure you that it will not. For all practical purposes, you might as well set SSID to on.

If you think Apple should fix this, I suggest you post to the suggestion area:

candig.wales,

You should take the one that is not working back to your Apple store for repairs or exchange. You have one that works, it is obvious that something is not right with the second one.
