Getting ext. DVD to play
Posted: Apr 10, 2009 9:17 AM

The CD/DVD drive in this machine died and so in haste I replaced it with a HPDVD1040 external drive. My mac sees the drive. Will play and burn cd's, but when I try to play a dvd it gives me an error code of -70012 and comment that a valid dvd drive cannot be found. I spoke with HP and of course they do not support MAC. (go figure) They did say they thought it was the "global setting" that was the problem. After reading a few other "similar" situations here-is this a case that I may be able to reset the firmware of the drive? If so where do I find the firmware app to do this and how do I get the drive to reset? Your help would be appreciated.

Solved

The included DVD player can't play from an external DVD drive if it doesn't find an internal one due to licensing restrictions. Use the VLC Player instead.

I will give this a try. This machine runs my projection system for my clients, so getting a reliable dvd player is important. Probably best solution would be to have the drive replaced, but can't take the time to take it out of operation. If VLC player doesn't work if there another solution? Thanks

There is a way to get DVD Player and Front Row to work with an external drive when an internal drive doesn't work.

1. You need a hex editor. I use 0xED: http://www.suavetech.com/0xed/0xed.html

2. Make a backup copy of /System/Library/Frameworks/DVDPlayback.framework/Versions/A/DVDPlayback.

3. You'll need to open 0xED as root to manipulate DVDPlayback. Use the following line in Terminal (assuming you installed 0xED in /Applications):

sudo "/Applications/0xED.app/Contents/MacOS/0xED"

It will prompt you for your password to launch as root.

4. 0xED will open (usually behind other open apps). Open DVDPlayback (not the backup) with 0xED.

5. Hit cmd-f to open the find/replace dialog. For Find, enter (without quotes) "internal". For Replace, enter "External". Make sure Ignore Case is checked. Hit Replace All. The bottom left of the window should state that 4 changes are made.

6. Save the file. Exit 0xED. DVD Player and Front Row will work with the external drive now.

Note: Any internal drive you add while DVDPlayback is patched this way will probably not work, especially without an external drive present.
