ipod 20gb photo U2 special edition

Hi
Hope you can help????
I have a ipod u2 photo GB. Which will only connect via Firewire.
When the ipod connects to itunes it will start updating the disconnect. But itunes will think the ipod is still attached and try to update, itunes will then crash. Windows then think the ipod is still connected. But the ipod is on the menu screen
i have to force a cold **** down of the machine. when i try it agian the problem starts agian. when i connect the ipod.
I have updated the ipod drive
Ran the ipod dignostis which all pass
updated itunes to the latests one.
tried different ports.
tried the ipod connected to the computer is disk mode.
restored the ipod loads of times
changed terminal sevices in Window services
change the deives letter for the ipod.
tired another machine same problem.
tired manual sync and auto sync.
Please help running out of ideas

sorry i have for got to add i have a Nano and a ipod video and the both are fine and i do not have a problem with them connecting to itunes. Which leads me to think that there is a issue with the ipod. how do i fix it?????
I love my special edition so much
