From the brief searching I've done, this issue has hit many users. Have you installed the patch yet?
Is the fan running while the game is open?

I have the same spec as you just a bigger HD.
The Sims 3 runs on low settings with me and first thing I did was install the patch for the game launcher.

What patch is it that you are referring to? Could you direct me to the link to download it? When I installed the game, it did some downloading but that might have been part of the basic installation.

Try turning off Time Machine. Click the change disk button in TM prefs and then change the disk to none.
My roomie has been doing this for about an hour or so and it hasn't crashed!
