I can't install the Software Update from Java for my MacBook.
It just says: Can't instal, Error.
Anybody with the same Problem?

The exact errors are:
The update for "Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4" can't be installed.
Then, after clicking "OK" in the error box:
An error occurred during installation.
Then, after clicking "OK" again:
Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4: Error.
I was afraid I will feel uncomfortable migrating from PC to Mac, but I already feel right at home. Software Update is very similar to Microsoft Update. They both give you useless error messages.
And if you're wondering, I did close all my browsers as suggested before attempting to install the update. Actually, I closed all the applications, and I still receive the error. I will try to reboot, and see what happens next. Maybe there are some Java processes running in the background or something.

There weren't any Java processes running, but I rebooted anyway.
After reboot, I ran Software Update again.
The Java Update was downloaded again, and installed successfully. Most likely, the initial download was corrupted somehow.

Friends,
I've posted the solution to this problem here:
http://www.resourcesforlife.com/docs/item2021
In summary, run the Repair Disk Permissions function of the Disk Utility. Then try again.

I successfully installed it manually, but I get the following error:
$ java -version
Unable to find a $JAVA_HOME at "/usr", continuing with system-provided Java...
Unable to find a $JAVA_HOME at "/usr", continuing with system-provided Java...
java version "1.5.0_19"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_19-b02-304)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_19-137, mixed mode, sharing)
$
Any ideas?

this is the issue I have now as well. The environment variables/ links aren't updated or something is overriding the links. $JAVA_HOME is null. Is there a list of things to check for this, or should I try the installation again?

I notice that (using la -la /usr/bin | grep java) that /usr/bin/java is a symbolic link to
/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/Current/Commands/java
A little scouting around in the JavaVM.framework area shows that there is a Home directory there, which in turn is a symlink to Versions/CurrentJDK/Home
Experiment shows that if in my .bashrc file I specify
export JAVA_HOME=/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Home
then I no longer get the error message "Unable to find a $JAVA_HOME at "/usr", continuing with system-provided Java...".
Whether this is the ideal solution, or even strictly speaking a correct one, I am unable to judge.

Great! Thanks for posting your fix. It seems likely that it is just an issue related to that JAVA_HOME not liking being set to symlink (which it would find in /usr).
Setting it to /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Home cleared the error message for me as well.
Thanks again!
