Yes, I had the heat problem with the battery prior to the 3.0 OS release. That's why I was hoping that it might have been addressed in the 3.0 release. So, IMHO, the heat problem is not new (as it relates to enabling push email).
A buddy of mine has the same model that I do. I'm not sure if he has loaded the 3.0 release or not, but I know he had the same heat issue I did prior to 3.0.

I found it re-assuring that I wasn't the only one having problems.
If you can help...great. If you want to express and opinion, good on you too.
I have a 16gb 3G. I didn't have any problems before the update. After the update my battery lasts a few hours and gets very warm and my Mail keeps crashing when I have my work exchange email active.
I'm sure Apple will sort these issues soon, but you can understand people's frustration at having a fully working, awesome smart phone, having to wait with anticipation for this wonderful new update and then having these problems.
I, like many others hold Apple, what they do and what they stand for in very high regard. Perhaps naively we didn't expect to have these problems. Apple should take that as a compliment.

I have turned push off and Mail still crashes if my work exchange email account is active.

Try disabling push email. This workaround has given the appearance of working for me.

I updated from 2.2.1 to 3.0 and had no issues. Everything is working great. There are a few steps that I always taken before upgrading to a new operating system.
1. Turn off Push and set Fetch to Manually for mail settings.
2. Turn on Airplane Mode.
3. Turn off the iPhone by holding down the reset button until the power off slider appears and then slide to turn it off.
4. Plug the phone into the computer which powers the phone on and wait for iPhone to appear in Itunes and then upgrade.
You may want to try steps 1 and 3 and see if that will help your battery drain issues. The iPhone 3.0 operating system changes where the settings for the push and fetch for mail are located.
- To get to those settings, select the settings icon which is on the home screen by default unless you moved it.
- Select "Mail, Contacts, Calendars"
- Turn off Push and down in the Fetch section select Manually.
After following the above directions, turn off the iPhone and then restart it. Plug it into the charger. Later, you can set the mail settings back the way they were and see if this helps to resolve your issue.

Mine was getting hot too, I was so scared I turned it off to cool it down. My push is never ever on. And I was browsing stuff on App store. =/

Hi guys,
Thank you for the willingness to help
My iPhone is 1 month old 8GB. I have turned-off wifi and it seems to do the trick for battery temp and consumption, but I don't find it a sustainable (or even acceptable) solution. I hope Apple tracks down the issue (as I seem not to be alone in this) and release a patch asap.
Otherwise the upgrade went ok for me and apart from a few non-critical error messages on non-critical applications everything seems to work fine.
Looking forward to seeing the happy ending of this
Cheers,
Adrian

My 2G iPhone had the same problem yesterday. Drained battery with hardly any use after a couple of hours.
What I did was a full restore. Gave me some problems, but got iit working in the end. The phone's running with Wifi and Push mail on (no BT atm) and is doing just fine.

So, you restored your phone to a pre 3.0 state and it works fine?

I have just de-activated my work exchange email account and all has been fine since!
When I get the account details from IT I will delete the account and re-set it up again to see if that makes a difference.

I am also having the same problem, the phones gets hot and the battery will not charge at all. It worked perfectly before the 3.0 upgrade.

I have the original iPhone (pre-3G) and updated to 3.0 a few days ago and am starting to notice dramatic battery drain. Before the update I could go through a full day and a half before having to recharge. Now it barely makes it to 4 or 5 hours. My use hasnt been different--havent even tried the new features yet. I'm gonna try a full restore this weekend and see if that corrects the issue--I read somewhere that there might be background errors/conflicts going on that are creating additional drain to resources.

I have similar problems.
My 3G will become more hot with OS 3 than before. Especially on more power consuming applications like games.
I didn't installed any new apps since my update to 3.0.
Many apps runs slower as before and drains the battery faster.
For example, Need for Speed Underground. With OS 2 the app runs smoothly and good. Now with 3.0 it runs slower, juddering and the battery become hot. I about 15 minute of playing, the battery looses 40% of power.

After reading a few posts, I decided to try something out:
1. delete my Exchange account settings
2. cycle the power on the phone
3. set my Exchange account back up
4. enabled Push for my Exchange account
Usually, as soon as I do that, my phone gets hot. Right now it's not (30 mins has passed). I did send a few test emails to make sure the Push setting was working, and it was. I'll leave Push enabled this weekend and Monday. If my phone gets hot and/or my battery drains excessively, I'll let you all know.
So, when I upgraded my phone, I just applied the 3.0 upgrade to my phone with all of my phone settings intact (e.g. I did not remove email settings, turn on airplane mode, etc.). So, when the 3.0 upgrade was done, my settings carried over and everything appeared to be working. I then enabled Push on my Exchange account. That's when I noticed the battery draining quickly and getting hot. What I think I've basically done is setup my Exchange account using the 3.0 software versus the 2.2.1 software. It's a shot in the dark, but maybe something is configured differently with the 3.0 software versus the 2.2.1...
