Please see the image attached, in some applications I get a line of dead pixels, or what looks like it. This will disappear in another application and sometimes if I open a new window. This has only happened since I downloaded 10.5.7
Can I get rid of it? I have also had many freezes since the OS update usually the finder or dock

thanks for your help

Hello Alpina:
The problems sound suspiciously like hardware.
Try booting from your software install DVD while holding the "D" key down. That will invoke Apple's hardware tester.
If you do think the OS X 10.5.7 update caused problems, download the combo updater and apply it.

OK looks like the hardware is really on the way out. I'm a bit worried I could lose several years of work in progress. I have a backup in the form of a 2nd internal hard drive linked to time machine, but I'm afraid that if I carry my files over to a new hard drive the corruption will carry over too. Most of the files still open but the freezes and wierd pixel effects happen every ten minutes now. I couldn't copy the files to an external HD, and I could only backup certain folders to a DVD before the crashes arrived in the form of a freezing toast that could not be force-quit.
I could install a clean OS on the new HD I just bought, and copy my work folders over, or
I could do a clean install on the old HD then restore it with time machine before copying the files to the new HD, but then I'm 100% relying on time machine as my backup.
any advice or alternatives would really be appreciated, thanks

Hello again:
Have a good backup. I am hardware-challenged, so I never give hardware related advice. If I ever have hardware problems (or suspect them) I contact Apple.

If you do a Google search on -- 10.5.7 and horizontal line in window -- you will find numerous posts about this. Almost all involve the Mac Pro and most the ATI 1600 video card. A search in this forum will also reveal several posts on this topic.
The symptoms suggest a problem either with the video driver in 10.5.7 or with the graphics card itself. I'm not sure if the Mac Pro has a separate graphics card or if it is built into the logic board. The fact that the symptom appeared with 10.5.7 perhaps makes it more likely that it is the driver at fault, but I'm not certain.
You might try reinstalling the OS by downloading and applying the Mac OS X 10.5.7 Combo Update. Better yet, if you have a cloned backup from before you upgraded to 10.5.7 you could restore to the earlier system to differentiate between a software (driver) versus hardware problem.

Addendum: I hadn't noticed that Barry had already suggested the Combo Update - sorry.
