I am on my second 3G S. Both phones have the high pitch sound upon sound file play. I can also hear it in a video that was shot from the first phone and played on the second.

I'm having the same problem with speaker whine after the Lock and I'm also having a speaker issue as well where certain sounds that come out of the speaker sound distorted, see here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2048550&tstart=0
Listen to the Tri-tone text message sound and if you had an earlier iPhone you'll notice the sound is different. Almost a different pitch. This happens with other sounds as well, but very noticeable with Tri-tone.
Wonder if the two are related, the speaker whine and the distorted sounds.

Hey eric,
Finally someone else noticed the tri-tone text message tone being completely different! It is only when the phone is in sleep mode. It sounds normal every other time.

i also have this problem, it's my second iphone, and my 3g had quite a different sound overall...
i went to the apple store, they ran diagnostics and found no problem, he went to get his own 3gs.
his did the same thing, he felt that the 3.0.1 update might address this problem, he stated the software may have the volume settings to high... he did how ever offer to replace my 3gs, which i declined, because who knows what problem the new phone may have, so i turned it down 4 clicks...
he also stated if i turn it off every couple days it may help overall performance, which is not exactly what i expected, but such is the game we play....

On mine there is NO whine when "unlocking" the phone. It only beeps for a few seconds after locking, or while recording video.
My 3G does not beep, but does emit a white noise for a period of time after locking.
It seems like the result of the speaker being on, but no data being fed to it or something like that.

I'm having terrible sound issues with my 32gb white 3gs. High pitched squeal, white noise and a skipping of sound. Have a genius appt today to trade as the main reason is my new phone since day one had a scratch on the glass! Not what I wanted on my new phone! Hoping the new one doesn't have these issues!

It happens when recording audio to... I'm sire they could have the driver turn the speakers off while recording...
as far as the sounds playing, it doesnt happen with all of them, but almost sounds like the audio wasnt trimmed right or the speakers are just not grounded...

Eric & Code
I notice the same two things:
1) Totally blown out audio on tri-tone when unit is asleep
2) High pitched whine when system sounds are used
3) Whine present on video and audio recording
Hope we get a fix for this ASAP, very annoying and seems to be affecting a large number of us

I am also experiencing the blown-out SMS tone and the high pitched whining. I have a black 32GB iPhone 3G S and my serial number ends in 3NR. I think it has something to do with the serial numbers ending in 3NR.

I got my first ever iPhone yesterday. Its a brand new 3GS, and the screeching sound is driving me crazy! I called Apple Care this morning and discussed the problem at length. After ten minutes, I was told, "That's just the way the phone is." (I sarcastically asked if I had inadvertently called Mircosoft.) In the meantime, I just flip the phone into vibrate mode to send a message and then change it again once its sent. That's cumbersome and annoying, but it doesn't seem like there's any solutions yet. And I'm not holding my breath since Apple hasn't even acknowledged the problem. Maybe I'll just return the phone and wait until there's a patch or a fix or a new model or something? As it is right now, my dog runs out of the room every time I use the phone. I wonder if the tone is actually hurting his ears?

I Also have the high pitch sound problem when I shot my video and play audio files.
What Apple said about it?

you can put the mute switch on while recording and it won't happen, but I suspect a firmware update will solve this...but who knows. I can't believe no one picked this up when testing the phone...
