Battery getting hot

I don't know if this is normal or not so I thought I'd ask. I use my iPhone 3gs say record a video and send it to YouTube. My battery drops by 4% and the back of phone heats up quite a bit. I guess I'm wondering if this is normal. Thanks

Interesting that you mention this... my friend just called me to ask if that's normal. He lost 5% recording and uploading.... and then the phone got extremely hot. He almost put it into the fridge. We both know that his location is notoriously bad for phone reception, let alone 3G so that may be the cause. From his description, the phone was hot enough to worry.
Maybe you should check if you are getting good 3G in the location you recorded/uploaded. There are many free speedtest apps on the appstore you can try.

I'm getting a full signal on 3G and the upload/download speeds are not to shabby. It's kind of wierd, but i'm guessing it's like a laptop. What I mean is the longer I use my laptop the hotter that battery and the bottom gets from just working as well.

Some of the suggestions mention a 'renew' software and re-install your apps and that might help. Otherwise, I'd contact Apple, either by phone at (800) 694 7466, take it to a local Apple Store. They should give you a new phone if the problem persists.

Ya... I've used mine a lot since release and it has never gotten "hot". Everyone's definition is of course different. I've noticed the phone get "warmer" from certain activities (zynga poker) but it was not "hot" to me. I guess it's hard to describe hot but if it's uncomfortable to hold, I would say you definitely have a problem you should talk to apple about.
A heated phone breeds poor battery life, which also breeds heat. It's like a nasty cycle from a glitch (hardware or software). I would just replace it, they don't ask questions.

Add me here as a "me too". I got the 3GS on June 19th. No overheating issues UNTIL YESTERDAY - I was doing mail, web browsing, PDF, VPN, etc, all over 3G and after a while I noticed, "gee this thing is getting hot". I figured it was due to some runaway process so I just rebooted the phone (hold power+home). It remained hot/warm but not untouchable and not hot enough to burn anything for a while and eventually cooled off to normal.
I also notice worse battery life with 3.0 but I believe this is due to a change in the behavior of email checking-- even if an account is marked as "Manual", it will attempt to check it if you open the mail application (even if you don't force it to check), and if you have multiple accounts and at least one is set to Fetch, it appears as if ALL accounts are checked on the fetch schedule. This wastes battery for me when I'm on 3G because I have my work email account on the phone set to Manual because I'm not always on a wifi that can reach my work's intranet.
Apple has done a great job with 3.0 in my opinion, but there are a few lingering issues that still need to be addressed. I believe the overheating issue might also be software-related, due to runaway processes, etc.

Well I went to the apple store two days ago and they just replaced the phone. They noticed that i've restored the phone twice so they said here you go! You have to hand it to Apple, they have great customer service.

I agree. It is due to run away processes. Rebooting the phone should alleviate the problem.

If you got your Iphone at an AT&T dealer, will the Apple store still replace your phone since you did not buy it an Apple store?
Might be a dumb question, but figured I would find out!
