Apple Remote Desktop losing connection on Fast User Switch / Logout

Hello all-
I am having an issue ARD'ing into Mac OS X Server 10.4.9 across the internet or on my local home office LAN.
Everything works brilliantly until I attempt to Fast User Switch or logout the current user. At this point, I lose connection to the server. The problem is, however, ARD does not think I have lost the connection and keeps me in a state of limbo where I cannot control or observe.
My only recourse has been to reboot the server machine. Since it's headless, this has sometimes required a (gasp) forced shutdown when the ARD reboot command is unsuccessful.
I could have sworn I have done this in the past and was impressed how ARD handled a logout/FUS by saying "attempting to re-connect" and then actually bringing back the display.
Has something changed? Please advise.
Thanks!
Eric

Is ARD up to date on both the admin and the client (3.1)?
And, can you quit ARD and open it up again and then connect? If not, then it is something wrong on the client side (I presume..)

Hi Doran-
Thanks for the suggestions. ARD is completely up to date on both. Quitting and reopening ARD does not help, unfortunately. In addition, I have tried this on a network here and a completely separate client system over the internet.
Any other thoughts? -should- I be able to log out / Fast User Switch and expect the connection to hold, or am I trying to do something out of spec? Thanks....

Well like you mentioned above, you should be able to logout a user and then ARD will automatically reconnect.
How are you logging out, are you using the ARD feature "Log Out Current User"? or are you controlling the computer then clicking logout from the Apple menu?
Maybe you should try reinstalling the Admin program and it still doesn't work try reinstalling the client program using Apple's instructions (below).

Hi Doran -
Good point, I am not using the ARD "Log Out" feature. I am fast user switching on the remote client machine or logging out on the remote client machine natively.
Thanks for the link to the client reinstall - I will try that since I have tried the Admin program on two computers to no avail.

Fast User Switch will kill the ARD connection. The agent (and all supporting processes such as the VNC server) must be stopped in the current users session, and restarted in the new users session.

Thanks very much Brian - this is great to know.
Using the ARD "Send UNIX Command" option, do you happen to know which commands I would enter to figure out the process IDs, etc and then kill them, and then restart them?
All the best-

To the best of my knowledge, you can't kill and restart the ARD processes using ARD (well, you might be able to kill the, but you can't restart them). That would be akin to putting away a ladder you're still standing on. To shut down or restart the ARD processes remotely, you'd have to connect to the system via SSH (Remote login) and use the kickstart command.

Hello,
I have also been having this problem but none of the above appears to be able to fix it. Any suggestions?

I've had the exact same issue. Using kickstart to stop and start ARD doesn't help. The ARD monitoring application thinks ARD is active, and it seems to log in. However, it generates a phantom window that can become active (the ARD machine list becomes inactive), but there's no actual window there. I've only succeeded in recovering by rebooting the remote machine from the command line.
If I log one user out and then log another in, everything works fine...ARD dies but then restarts normally.
This setup (ARD and fast user switching to another user) works for me on other machines. Some details of this machine that I haven't tried on others, maybe you'll see something in common.
OS X Server 10.4.10 is the remote machine
OS X Client 10.4.10 is the monitoring machine
Intel XServe DP 3.0 is the remote machine
Remote machine is running VMWare Fusion, though the VM doesn't need to be active for this to occur
Remote machine set to auto log in a user that does not have ARD login rights
I connect via ARD as a privileged user and the Fast Switch and it fails
Logging out works, but once logged in as another user a Fast Switch fails too
Thanks for any ideas.

Pitty, that there aren't any updates regarding this matter.
Our 10.5.1 OS X server with VMware Fusion and Fast User Switching enabled, experiences identical behaviour.

This is exactly the issue I am having as well. I need one user to be running for VM purposes, but need to switch to the other user.
