10.4.10 Snap Crackle Pop
Posted: Jun 20, 2007 4:31 PM

Just updated to 10.4.10 and now my mini entertains me with random popping noises from the speakers, just as if the audio port was turning itself off and on in minute intervals. Drives me bonkers.

Ever since I got my MacBook Pro, the right speaker makes a hiss noise. If I am on AC, it only does it on boot for a few seconds, and if I am on battery, it does it every time a sound plays. It does it under OS X and Windows, so I assume it's some sort of hardware issue, but since it doesn't do it all the time I didn't really worry much about it.

Now since updating to .10, it's making the hiss noise every minute or so.

Okay, it's not happening every minute or so. It's happening any time a sound plays. This used to happen only on battery, now it's happening on AC as well.

Also, I noticed my battery never goes over 98% anymore, even though it is always plugged in.

Join the Apple Developer Connection at http://developer.apple.com/ and they'll gladly provide you a seed copy. Might be a bit expensive, however. Barring that, you could get an invite from Apple directly. Note that the testing program's been going on for a bit and I'd be surprised that they'd invite anyone at this late date. Amazon is accepting prepurchase orders.

Mine seems to have stopped doing the popping noise every 15 seconds, and rather just does it right before a sound is produced. It doesn't pop when music or EyeTV are playing. Only when something or other decides no sound is playing, so the sound card can be turned off...resulting in a off-popping noise, and an on-popping noise when the system is about to emit a sound.

Work-around for now (for me anyway) is to turn off the audible notifications in Adium...and I guess leave iTunes running.

I'm having the same problem of noises on my mac mini since updating. I'm going to see if the combo update fixes it, as deleting all my caches with Onyx did not solve the problem.

I tried the combo update. You can save yourself the time, it didn't fix a thing.

Yep. Didn't help one bit. Sadly, I didn't read your post until I had already finished the process.

At least your computer still boots. After installing 10.4.10, my machine dumps me to the console whenever I log in. So right now I'd actually be really excited if all I had was some crackling in the speakers...

Hi Kar98;

I read your thread just after I had upgraded my PowerMac Quad. I have been listen to everything I can think of that does sound. So far I haven't noticed a problem. I then decided to do my MacBook Pro and it is working perfectly fine at 10.4.10 also now.

I'm getting the sense this is either just a mac mini issue or an intel mac issue.

I have the same issue and am on a MacBook Core Duo 2.0Ghz. Just so you know what the sound is:

The sound is the sound of the audio chip going into power save mode. If you play a sound after it goes into power save mode, the audio system will make the same thump sound (if you have big speakers like mine) and the sound will play.

This is expected behavior when you are running a laptop and on battery power. It is not supposed to do this on AC power. So Apple really screwed something up as now it does it all the time. Can't have this. Apple, please fix this mess pronto!
