Internal hard drive weirdness... S.M.A.R.T status failing

Thanks for reading.
I have a Quicksilver, 733 mHz machine with 1g ram... the PROBLEM is that I have two identical 60 GB internal Maxtor HD's that have run wonderfully for many years... they just decided to tell Disk Utility that "this drive has reported a fatal hardware error to disk utility". And the S.M.A.R.T status is reported as failing- on BOTH drives. That is why I don't believe this... suffice to say, I backed up everything.
The only change that has occurred recently, is an upgrade to OS 10.4.10. In its current status, I cannont run first aid or reformat (which is what I was trying to do in the first place).
Any suggestions?

Try just one drive at a time (set to Master). The bad drive could be interfering with the bus and make the other drive look bad.

Thanks for the response. Before reading it, I bought a can of air and unhooked the HD's as well as the RAM chips and a few other things and cleaned out the system- it was pretty dusty. Now, it won't even turn on! So, it may just be fried. It seems like when one thing goes wrong, everything starts going wrong... any suggestions for my new problem?
Thanks!

Try pushing the power reset button (near the battery) once.

Alright, this thread is getting confusing! I am up and running again, though I am unable to start up at all on my main 17 inch apple studio display (old crt monitor). I switched to another old CRt (non-mac, and needs own external power) and it is starting up fine- faster than before actually. I went ahead and disconnected the disk without the operating system, and it didn't fix it, I then disconnected the disk with the operating system and this didn't fix it. I then reconnected both drives, took out the RAM and rebooted. Then shut down and restarted while clearing the PRAM. This didn't fix it. I then rebooted off of the restore/install disk and ran disk utility. It doesn't report any error messages and I am trying to run the repair. I will post the outcome.

OK, back to square one. The error message is the same- "this drive has reported a fatal hardware error to disk utility". And the S.M.A.R.T. status is failing. I can't erally believe it because it is the case with both of my drives and they are both running fine.
When I restarted onto the startup disk, I was able to repair permissions and repair the disk. I also erased one of the disks as well.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Do both disks report errors if only one at a time is in the computer?
Run Extended Tests from the Apple Hardware Test disc. If it gives errors with both drives installed, try one at a time (Jumpered Master when only one present, Master and Slave when both are present).

Yes, both are reporting errors even when only one is plugged in. Since I don't have the hardware test disk, my hand are ties there. I am at a loss. I am thinking about buying a new drive, but I am not sure that is the right solution... thanks for all your help, and if you can think of anything else, please let me know.

If you have an extra data ribbon cable, why not try connecting one drive at a time to the slower, optical drive bus. You may be able to determine if the problem is actually with the ATA-66 bus, to which the hard drives are connected.

sorry for the long hiatus. I downloaded the hardware test... also, found that a power spike at the beginning of summer due to AC units all coming on around the same time can fry a HD, even through a power strip (which doesn't do a great job of regulating voltage anyways). So, they are in fact fried. They even started chirping, which is a bad sign... at least I have been able to salvage all of my data.
Thanks very much for the help
