Can't go to Google.com
Posted: Jul 22, 2007 11:39 PM

I have noticed an interesting and starting to get painful problem with my macbook.

I can't access any of Google's websites. The search bar on Safari doesn't work either. All these sites time out.

I have the same problem in Firefox.

I've checked the firewall and nothing has changed. I've cleared the cache and reset Safari but no joy.

My desktop PC has no problem going to Google and my wife's computer goes there too. All the computers in the house are part of the same network and access the internet via the same wired/wireless netgear router and dsl modem.

Yahoo and Dogpile work fine.

Anybody heard of this before? Any suggestions?

Hello retic:

The fact that the same situation exists on Firefox puzzles me (not a big help, I know). You could try resetting Safari and trashing the preference file (com.apple.safari.plist) and restarting.

Since your ISP access is on the same network where other computers reach the site rules out a number of other things.

I noticed the same problem with Safari and Firefox. It does work on Netscape?

Hello again:

A suggestion to both of you. If your profiles are correct, you should update to OS X 10.4.10.

I had already cleared the cache and reset Safari.

It took a while but I found the file you mentioned. I dragged it onto the desktop and restarted Safari.

No change. Can't access anything Google.

Hello retic:

Now I am really puzzled. I am going to post a link to this thread in another forum to see if some colleagues (much smarter than I am) have some ideas.

Could be a "cookie" issue.
Open Safari preferences / Security tab
Click the Show Cookies button and delete any from Google.
Quit and relaunch Safari and try Google again.

It can't be cookies, I've reset Safari twice and cleared all cookies and cache in Firefox.

I've determined it's only when I'm on the wireless network. Right now I turned off the airport inside the macbook and am using an ethernet cable.

I can now access Google just fine.

I've checked in my router and there are no blocked sites. I can't figure it out. Pretty weird.

Now I guess I better check my other two wireless computers. I didn't think to try them yet.

Once I try them I'll report back.

Any suggestions on airport settings would be appreciated.

If you can't tell, I've run windows based PCs for years, but I'm almost MAC illiterate. I love my Macbook but sometimes it frustrates me to no end.

Hi Retic:

Please let us know what you find out - it could help others. I do not have a wireless network (mine is Ethernet) so the wireless thing did not occur to me.

Well, one of my other laptops accesses Google just fine wirelessly. It's running windows 2000 thought.

It must be some kind of setting in this macbook or maybe some kind of worm or virus that nobody seems to be aware of. I just did accept the latest updates a couple days ago. I'm wondering if that has anything to do with it.

I have to keep working on it.

I use this computer on the road a lot and hotel ethernet doesn't work on this computer so I have to run wireless in all hotels. That's another problem nobody seems to be able to tell me why.

Helpful

If it's only your machine, it could be firewall related. Open Terminal and enter the following:

*sudo ipfw flush*

Then enter your Administrator password when requested, and then 'y' to confirm. The message:

+Flushed all rules.+

should be returned.

Hello retic:

One note - there are NO documented viruses/worms that affect a Mac running OS X - none.

This gets stranger still.

I'm at my mother's house tonight. I have internet access set up here too. It's also a wired/wireless netgear router, only here it's cable instead of dsl.

As soon as I booted up, I fired up Firefox and immediately accessed Google.com via the AirPort with no trouble.

Safari accessed Google just fine as well.

I then flushed the rules. I don't think it was the Apple firewall though because I turned it off and still couldn't access Google.

I didn't think there were any viruses or worms affecting Macs but wasn't totally sure. Thanks for the reassurance. That's one reason I bought the Macbook. I'm sick of buying AV licenses for several computers every year. Plus the AV software eats up lots of processor cycles.

But what about spyware? Should I be scanning for that? If so how?

But I won't be able to test it out at home for a couple of days probably. So I'll keep you posted.

I'm really appreciating all your input.
