Are you using an Apple or a Windows computer?

As you've probably discovered, the installation software for Airport Utility is only available on the CD, and not on this website. However, there is a way to get the software, but it requires a bit of a hack on your part. Some of this relates to Vista, so if you are running XP I think that you can ignore 14-19.

1. You will need a program called Less_MSIerables:
http://blogs.pingpoet.com/overflow/archive/2005/11/16/14995.aspx
2. Download it to your desktop
Unzip that file (Should end up in your unzipped file folder)
3. Now, download Airport Extreme (works for Airport Express, too) software:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airportbasestationupdate2007001forwindows.html
4. Run
5. A window will open that states "This Update requires AirPort Version 5.0 to be Installed". Don't exit from this window.
6. Instead, go Start ->start search and type in %temp%. Enter.
7. YOu will see a file folder called I+XP050.TMP+
8. Open it.
9. You should be able to see a file called APsetup.msi.
10. Click your mouse on it, but don't open it.
11. At the top of the window you will see if the address of this file. If not, click the yellow file folder in the address bar. Copy that address.
12. Next go to the folder in which you saved the unzipped version of Less_Msierables
13. In a subfolder you will see a file called Lessmsi.
14. Right-click on this file
15. Go to properties.
16. Go to compatability.
17. Run in XP Mode
18. Apply
19. OK
20. Again right-click on icon.
21. Run as administrator.
22. In the window that pops up, paste the address of Apsetup.msi
23. You will see a list of many files, but the one of the first will be APUtil.exe.
24. Extract this file to a location that you can easily find.
25. A file folder will appear with a name like _cab_#APSetup.cab1
26. Open that file folder and you will see a file APUtil.exe
27. Click on that file, and the admin utility will open. You should be able to find your airport device.

I suggest that you move this file to your desktop for easy access.

Very helpful. Now the only question that remains is why doesn't Apple provide the software for those who've lost the CD?

I don't have the installation CD... Tried to look for this installer for the last 2 hours on the apple site before checking this forum... Apple stop frustrating your Windows customers please (iTunes is enough already ;p).

Thanks for this info. Here are my updates to the directions using Vista Ultimate:

1. You will need a program called Less_MSIerables:
http://blogs.pingpoet.com/overflow/archive/2005/11/16/14995.aspx
2. Download it to your desktop
Unzip that file (Should end up in your unzipped file folder)
3. Now, download Airport Extreme (works for Airport Express, too) software:
http://wsidecar.apple.com/cgi-bin/nph-reg3rdpty2.pl/product=14697&cat=1&platform=osx&method=sa/AirPort521Update.exe
4. Use a program like winrar or winzip to uncompress that file to a new folder
5. Next go to the folder in which you saved the unzipped version of Less_Msierables
6. In a subfolder you will see a file called Lessmsi.
7. Right-click on this file
8. Go to properties.
9. Go to compatability.
10. Run in XP Mode
11. Apply
12. OK
13. Again right-click on icon.
14. Run as administrator.
15. Then click on the ... button to browse to the folder you uncompressed the AirPort521Update (adjust for whatever version they happen to be on)
16. You will see a list of many files, but the one of the first will be APUtil.exe.
17. Extract this file to a location that you can easily find.
18. A file folder will appear with a name like _cab_#APSetup.cab1
19. Open that file folder and you will see a file APUtil.exe
20. Click on that file, and the admin utility will open. You should be able to find your airport device.

I suggest that you move this file to your desktop for easy access.

Hello Boys and Girls

I am having the same f*cking problem, and i am really starting to get angry. :P

I followed to instructions, but at the "Open as Administrator" part, i keep failing.
I can't seem to be able to press the "..." button or remember the password for the Administrator profile.

Can someone help me with this?
And why the h*ll didn't Apple make the update to 5.0 available om the net? That's what the support department is for ffs. When you loose your CD!!

Anyway, someone might have the file and would like to upload it somehow?

Would be a great help, cause at the moment, my computer can't seem to communicate with my base station at all, and i am dying to get my Apple TV to work.

THX!!

Well, my mistake. A number is generated, but it will have a different number. It should be something like IXPO50.TMP (those plus signs were supposed to be the italicization feature ... ignore them). So, the file should be XXXXXX.TMP.

Good Luck.
