Power Supply unit fan doesnt spin
Posted: Aug 4, 2007 8:12 AM

Hi all

My B&W G3 tower's PSU fan doesn't spin. It boots up normal and the internal fan spins but not the PSU fan. Just curious but will a sawtooth PSU work in my B&W tower. If I can swap, I will. I have an extra one here.

Thanks
Jim

Web dude,

Replace that fan immediately! They are a dime a dozen and easy to replace if you know which end of a soldering iron gets hot. Open up the power supply and take a look. See if you are up to the task. Four screws and you should be set. Find a discarded computer and raid the fan out of it.

I have not checked the specks on the sawtooth PS but the fan itself will work fine. Raid a cheap PC PS first.

Solved

Even a new one is not that expensive. This site has a bunch for comparison:

When you disassemble down to the fan itself, do a web search on the part number of the fan. You probably can't buy that exact fan in quantities under 1000 pieces, but the specs should tell you what you need in a replacement.

You want one with about the same or a bit more Cubic Feet per Minute CFM rating, and it would be nice if it has about the same or lower noise rating in deciBells dB.

Some fans come with a third (yellow) wire. This is an RPM output. It could be read to decide whether the fan is still spinning. You can leave it unconnected it if your original did not have a yellow wire. Some vendors reduce their total inventory costs by carrying only three-wire fans.

Hi all,

You guys were very helpful. I swapped the sawtooth PSU with the B&W one and it worked great. Very compatible. Now I have one with a bad fan lying around, not sure if I should toss it or fix it.

Thanks

Go ahead and repair it, but I wouldn't bother with installing a used fan. You'd have no idea of how much service life it has left in it or when it will become noisy (if it hasn't already). My feeling is that the time spent opening the PSU and removing/installing the cooling fan is more valuable than the cost of parts, particularly a small fan. Beyond the amount of air that the fan moves (CFM), another factor to consider is the specified noise level of the fan at a given speed. It's worth spending more for a quiet fan, than listening to a noisy one.
