imovie 08 is a downgrade
Posted: Aug 9, 2007 10:45 AM

where do i complain? There are little to no video editing features with this new iMovie 08. yes some features are nice but it seems to be a rather downgraded, throw together an ok vacation video program. before i was able to have some artistic liscense and now it is very plug in and go.

iMovie '08 is NOT a 'downgrade' from iMovie HD. It is an entirely NEW application - althought I hate to use the overused expression, think out of the box! You have not lost iMovie HD on the install of iLife '08 and it can still be used.

you don't need to go anywhere to complain because apple just released iMovie HD 6 for anyone who owns iLife 08:

you can download it here:

i like the new imovie. but then again, i am a FCP user. i never used iMovie HD either.

for me imovie '08 is fantastic for throwing together good looking home movies in very, very little time. i love the organizational aspect of it too.

for any project that takes more than 30 minutes to put together, or requires editing beyond simple cuts, ill use FCP.

obviously not a solution for everyone, but iMovie HD is still around for those that want it.

Very well put, Richard! And, IMHO, exactly what Apple was trying to accomplish.

I was unaware that i could still use iMovie HD and import clips that way. Thank you, and sorry for thinking inside of the box.

it seems that there is no hope that iMovie 08 will accept the addition of any external third party plugins, such as the great ones developped by GeeThree!!!!

It's a pity thta iMvoie has lost such a great way of improvement!

Please give us back this ability!

(for the time being I will go back to iMovie 6 HD...)

Then they should have called it something else!! Since they kept the name the same people are thinking it will do all of the things the older iMovie did only better. Couldn't agree more about this being a downgrade!

It would have been much less of a shock to the paying userbase if iMovie '08 was a combination of iMovie HD's features and the new stuff. If the user wants to splice and order clips then he would be switched to the "new" UI.. and if the user wants to add chapters, do themes, and visual editing then he should have a toggle to swap the UI.

At this point, sure the new app is a totally new setup but Apple just threw off nearly the entire core userbase without much of an explanation and ...crucially... support documentation to help those who find themselves stuck. Users of an iApplication shouldn't have to browse forums to figure out how to use an consumer app. That's the fault of the HUI engineer or the documentation guy.

I would guess most of the core userbase doesn't have final cut pro or express. the reason for being upset is the big loss in functionality. Some people don't care if it only takes 30 minutes, and would rather have more control over editing.

Right. I'm aware. I suppose what I want, and probably many others like me, is an updated iMovie, without losing functionality.

I guess we can only hope that the next version returns functionality.

^^^^What, forcing people to purchase Final Cut if they want to fade in an out audio, extend transitions, and simple things like that that were available in iLife 06. Yeah, that's really cool of Apple.

I feel bad for people who purchase 08 but have never used 06. They will never know how good Apple can be at designing entry level video software.
