Printing iPhoto '06 books in iPhoto '08
Posted: Aug 19, 2007 6:33 AM

I've got a small problem here. Over the past couple of years, I've made a few very important books in iPhoto--wedding and honeymoon photo albums, to name a couple. I've had them printed and given copies to the family, with great results. But when I upgraded to iPhoto '08, it looks as if they have become unprintable. Viewing an 'old' album, I notice the following odd behaviors:

1) The usual strip of available photos or page layout thumbnails is not visible along the top of the window.

2) The format of the books, all previously hardcover, seems to have been changed to paperback.

3) Buttons along the bottom, like 'themes,' 'layout,' and 'advanced' do nothing.

4) Most distressing--when I click 'Buy Book' I get an error message that said 'Invalid Product: This type of product cannot be ordered.'

This seems like a big problem to me--old books that may have continued relevance or may be in progress are no longer usable. True, it would only take me about 30 minutes to recreate the old books in the new iPhoto, but does anybody have any tips or similar experiences?

Evan:

You might consider what I'm doing for a particular project that requires the Storybook theme. That's to use iPhoto 6 on a special library created just for that book. You can use both versions but just have to be very careful when launching either version. I will launch iPhoto with the option key depressed so it reminds me to be sure to open the correct library for that version of iPhoto.

Do you Twango?

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

This is definitely a good tip, but it's a little too late for me, as the books are attached to a library that's already been converted. Thanks though.

When you upgraded to iPhoto 08, did iPhoto 6 get preserved?

I have all my iPhoto 6 Libraries on an external drive, and a backup for them on another external drive. When I get my new iMac with iLife 08 on it, I am planning to upgrade my iPhoto 6Libraries, but I would like to preserve the photobooks I already created. If I understand you correctly, I can have both versions of iPhoto and use whichever one I want?

I have exactly the same problem and I am way back in a dark corner of the doghouse. My wife has spent weeks building a book on iphoto 06. I have backed up daily. I checked out iphoto 08 before installing it and the things that I used looked good so I updated to 08. When she tried to make changes the she had the same thing happened. No menu's etc. The big problem is that the family album theme has been changed so that many of the picture drop zones that were one vertical rectangles are now squares and will have to be completely rescanned to fit the new drop zone shape.

I reinstalled 06 as suggested by the Old Toad and got it working. Of course O8 changed the library so my wife cannot open it and finish the project in 06. I thought, this is no problem, I will just go back in time in Backup. Unfortunately Backup 3 will not restore those files. I have no idea what the problem is here but I have tried to restore iphoto libraries using the new Backup program from two different machines. They fail. Tonight (this is after about 12 hours of mucking around) I tried to read the 08 library and import it into Aperture 1.5. It does not see the library! I have owned Apple computers since 1979 and I have never gotten into the mess I am now in. Disgusted is the mildest term I can think of right now. If any has any ideas about what I can do it would be appreciated.

Make sure you create and preserve the 06 library first or you will not have it available to you if you upgrade to 08 as the 08 program will convert the files making the old library useless to 06. I have protected the other libraries by placing them on another hard drive. I use Iphoto Library Manager to change libraries. I know I am going to mess up one day and open an 06 library with 08 and all will be lost.
