New imac keeps freezing.
Posted: Aug 22, 2007 11:54 AM

I've had my new imac for 4 days and every day it keeps freezing this is normally on a screen saver or front row, I have tried force quit but nothing seems to help and in the end have to restart my imac, I have also done clean install but it is still keeps freezing up.

Any help would be appreciated.

Mikey.

Sounds like a hardware issue. But, before assuming this I would recommend:

These macs do seem to have issues with some software which causes them to freeze. Im hoping its fixable in an OS update of some kind, and that its not some hardware problem. So far, I think its a software problem.
If it is like the issues my new iMac has, you may find its just the graphics system which is locking up, rather than the entire Mac.
Heres hoping for an update soon, or at least some reassurance that it is definitely not a hardware problem.

Thanks for the replies

I'm hoping its not hardware, I've done a hardware check by holding D down on a reboot, switched the memory from 1 slot to the other (why I did this I'm not sure)

Maybe I'll give bootcamp a try and see if it freezes up on Windows. Its not like it freezes every 5 mins it can go a good 5hrs.

I have been having a similar issue. Tried all the basics but is very infrequent but way more than ever had on an iMac before. I have only ever really had to re-boot because of a software update before.

I too am experiencing this with my brand new 24" iMac 2.8Ghz. I eagerly await any answer that comes from Apple on this issue. It freezes hard (no mouse movement, no clack action, etc.) and requires a forced restart by holding the power button. Sometimes it happens when running Parrallels, sometimes in the middle of playing UT2004, sometimes while the screensaver is running, etc...

PLEASE help Apple! :)

By the way, it seems like the fans don't move much air through this thing... maybe thats it? I have two widgets that tell me the 3 fans are turning slowly, and the processor and graphic card heat-sinks read 125 and 145 degrees F right after the freezes...

Same here. Brand new iMax -- 10 days old -- and 5 or 6 incidents, so far:

1. One pop-up dialog box warning "System must be restarted" (or words to
that effect) -- on reboot, automatically sent OS-X "crash report" to Apple.

2. Two instances of sudden iTunes shutdown/disappearance in mid-tune.

3. Several "semi-freeze-ups" while selecting new desktop backgrounds --
Desktop&ScreenSaver preferences app shows no photos or only partial
photo selection (for both canned system backgrounds and iPhoto pics).
Normal function not resumed until after "Restart..."

...kinda like new linux releases -- but spendier,

My brother's 24" iMac keeps on freezing as well, though particularly when quitting from a fullscreen app.

Funny thing is, there's no freeze when going into 'windowed mode', and then subsequently quitting.

Also getting weird artefacts when using bootcamp, but that may not be related.

Sorry 'bout that -- maybe another lockup? Extremely slow browser response, and now I can't edit my own (truncated) message, above. One more try...

Definitely has the 'feel' of SW FUBARs, rather than HW (knock on wood)...

Update to my last reply:

I can make my iMac freeze up completely, except for the mouse, requiring a forced-restart, by opening QuickTime for Windows 7.2 in Parallels Windows XP... every time.

We have a few threads on this now.. So its certainly a significant issue I feel.

But to repeat what I said in another thread recently (because my iMac does this too).. I don't think it is a heat issue. I've checked system temps and although warm.. They are nothing out of the ordinary.
Plus, my iMac has locked up very soon after being turned on, when it could not have heated up so fast anyway. Plus it will still lock up if I use 3rd party software to ramp up the fan speeds more.
I could be wrong of course, but that is my hunch..

I've run hardware tests, including Apples own and Techtool tests. Multiple times even. And they have never shown any faults. I also eliminated any possibility of bad ram, by removing the apple supplied ram altogether and substituting for another chip, but still it locks up.

For those of you who's new (mid 2007) iMacs suffer this, you should find that most of the time, there is an error/crash log generated in the console under the system logs heading.
The logs will be big, but it may well be worth posting them up here, because someone smart enough should be able to decipher them and tell us what the problem really is. Im no techy, but what I have seen so far doesn't suggest anything obvious, but looks like lots of memory addresses? Another user in a different post reported the same thing. So I may post one up later..

So far, im leaning towards some software issue rather than any hardware defect. In which case an update should fix it. But again, thats just my opinion and semi-educated guess!

I received my new iMac, 20 inches, 2.4 Ghz,1 Gbyte memory 3 days ago. I have experienced 2 freezes, that is to say not in the way we experienced freezes with Os9 (nothing moves), but that the ball keeps spinning forever. Impossible to finish any programs, without turning off the computer completely. This is a big disappointment, I must say. Using Windows (XP) for some years, it was always possible to force quitting programs (ctrl/alt/delete). I thought this should be unnecesarry using MacOsX.
P.S. I read that when such things happened i should press 3 buttons. I tried that, but the ballkept spinning...Would be very grateful for any advise as I wish this never happen again.

my machine is about a week old now and i have frozen it about times. actually it is frozen right now in my office as i type this on my TiBook. the first couple of times i was using cinema4d and this last time i was in aperture.

the freeze starts when i try to perform some function within the app and then get the beach ball... after a few seconds i can tell its not responding since this thing has been extremely responsive in everything so far.. no force quit menu will come up, no dock, no cmd tab menu.. the mouse is still fully responsive though with no slowdown... if i wait a little the mouse pointer will return to the standard pointer.. i try to get the dock to come up from the bottom... hitting the pointer on the bottom of the screen a couple times get a beachball again for a few seconds.. thats all the activity i can get... machine acts fine after a restart..

i thought it might be a ram issue since its 1GB stock and i have been in apps that aren't shy on taking every bit of ram available but from the posts on here it looks like it may be something more.
