Multiple defective iPod classics

There seems to be a major problem with the 160 GB iPod classics (at least the silver model).
We ordered our FIRST iPod classic 160 GB (silver) online from the Apple Store the day they were announced, and ours arrived yesterday. Upon receiving it & turning it on, it would continuously restart itself to the Apple logo screen every few minutes, and it would lose all of our settings upon each restart... starting us all over again at the "choose a language" screen. In between bouts of restarting, the iPod Classic would intermittently freeze completely -- not responding to any scrollwheel clicks at all -- which would force us to do a FORCE RESTART of the iPod. This cycle of auto-restarting & freezing would happen continuously. This was even before syncing any music on it. So we erased & restored the iPod software using iTunes 7.4.1, and the same exact problem continued. We tried syncing all of our music to it to see if that would make a difference, but it couldn't even finish syncing our music without restarting or freezing -- and then getting error messages in iTunes that our iPod could not be found. Finally, we did manage to completely get through a music sync with iTunes, but the iPod classic started doing the same thing all over again -- alternating between freezing & auto-restarting.
So we brought it into the Apple Store, and they exchanged it for our SECOND iPod classic 160 GB (silver). This SECOND iPod classic EXHIBITS THE EXACT SAME PROBLEMS, yet with even more frequency! We can't even use it for more than 5 seconds without the iPod classic freezing or auto-restarting. We also tried restoring the iPod software using iTunes 7.4.1, all to no avail. Same problems, with or without music on the iPod classic.
So this SECOND iPod classic is being returned tomorrow, and we are NOT exchanging it for a 3rd one. We'll wait until Apple fixes this problem.

Thanks again, Justin... that workaround seems to work perfectly!!
Thanks for sharing your findings (and discussions with Apple) with me & the rest of us on the board here!

Glad that worked out for you.
I agree, it's annoying, and personally, I think the UI is rather ugly without art, but for now, it's what we have.
In my opinion (and it truly is just my feeling,) I'm betting we'll have a firmware update by Friday.
It's good to know though that we can at least have a valid workaround, and that this is indeed software related. In my mind, that at least means it's just a software update away from fixed.

Justin,
You say that Apple are aware of the issue and are working on a resolution..
without being rude, do you have any proof?
I'd assume there'd be an announcement of some sort, an official response.. is there even some kind of reference for it?
Thanks
Chris

I think the problem is simply that the sorting as artists (unchangeable default) splits the cover art into too many different pics. So, if say 4500 - 6000 Songs with different artists are transferred, the iPod goes to its knees and gives up. Seems nobody tried to sync so many songs before release. We had this item with earlier ipods, too. Using the album for sorting the coverflow (as it is in iTunes) should do things as they should. I for my part wait until this is fixed and transfer my songs then.

I agree. The one thing in common that everyone seems to have is they all have rather large music libraries. Of course, this makes sense: who else is going to buy a 160 gig but someone who has... a lot of music. If I was a new customer, there's no way I'd get a 160 off the bat. But I have a 4G 60 gig that's been full for months, so I sprung for the 160.
Oh, and if anyone is counting: I have also had problems with syncing/crashing. I'm going to try the fix of not uploading artwork, see if that helps anything. If not, I'll just pray for a software update ASAP.

Indeed...
I've been contacted by a member of Apple's engineering team as a result of my YouTUbe video.
I'd post his email address (@apple.com), but I doubt he'd appreciate it.
Point is, they are indeed aware, and are narrowing it down.

i have a 80GB in silver and don't have any of these problems, is this just happening to the 160GB ipods? i love the thing so far though, i'm not really a fan of the cover art thing and wish there was an option to remove it completely along with the generic icon which is displayed in-place of the cover art. i also wish there was a way to make custom EQ settings.

I have this problem (2-3 second menu lag) also with a 160gb with 80gb music on it, tried removing the album art and re-synced but it's still there.. I wonder if it just has to do with the number of artists or something like that - it's particularly bad going from the music page to the artists page

Are they aware of the other horrible problems?
/- VERY Slow menu switching response
/- Display of clock rather than song info when "Now Playing"
/- Inability to use existing LEGAL 3rd party dock products (including Apple-advertised)
/- Audio skipping during operation
/- Slow connection to Mac/PC
/- Inability to disable "split-screen" menus
/- Lagging / Unresponsive click-wheel
/- Camera Connector not working
/- Inability to use EQ settings without skipping / distortion
Oh, and are they aware of how angry customers get when Apple remove features that they like?
Cheers

I don't for sure to any of those points, but given how quickly they responded to my video, I'd say yes.

If by "Classic", Apple means old and slow (like me), then Yes I understand!
Apple really should make a public statement before this gets out of hand !
I love and have been using Apple products since early 1985!
( My 1978 Master's Thesis "The Spatial Data Management System" at MIT used the desktop metaphor to run a 8' x 11' screen, with octophonic sound, gesture-recognition touch-pads, a "Captain Kirk chair", pressure-sensitive joysticks, two touch screens, and a virtual frame buffer, so I KNOW what is good stuff)
I really don't want anything bad to happen to Apple. They clearly produce the most advanced, clever and easy-to-use products on the market.
This could badly damage their image, which is the key to their future (and ours).

problem is that if they admit there are problems people may not buy and buy something else instead. Some people won't wait for fixes even if they are coming. So don't know what is better for them: some missed sale, or irate and disillusioned faithful supporters.
I think they should make a statement regarding the crashing issue at least, since it's very reproducible, and has a workaround, and the non working accessories since many people have them and there is still no indication anywhere that they won't work so people may still be buying them.
The slow UI is a perception thing and I doubt they would admit to it.
