G5 coolant leaks
Posted: Sep 14, 2007 3:06 AM

Does anyone know what the failure rate for coolant leak is? I have a 2.7 gig machine which is about 2.5 years old, and only has 6 months of Applecare left. I am really afraid to keep it past that time for fear a leaking coolant. I rely on this machine for my 3d modeling business. Could all these machines fail sooner or later, or is this not the norm? Why doesn't Apple recall these machines? I feel like I'm being forced into having to buy a new machine, because of a manufacturing defect.

The only one who knows the answer to your question is Apple. The rest of us can only speculate. However, if the failure rate were as high as some claim it to be then we'd be seeing a lot more reports on this forum than we have. A handful of reports does not make this a design fault. More likely a manufacturing problem in which a certain number of cooling systems came out bad from the factory.

No, not all these machines are going to fail "sooner or later".
No, this is not the norm.

Any component on your machine could fail and you might be in for a large repair bill after the warranty period. If your livelihood depends on your machine, and you can't be without a working machine for any length of time, then you should consider having a backup computer to turn to when failure does occur. It's simply good business practice.

This make sense. My brother does have a 2.7 gig machine also, so that is not a problem. I may look into a new intel dual 3 gig machine at the end of my Applecare contract. I guess in another 6 months at 3 years old it will be time anyway. 4 cores would be sweet, the 8 core is a bit expensive.

I don't mean to alarm you, but coolant leaks are a genuine concern. XLR8YOURMAC.com has a running article with daily updates: http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/G5_coolant_leaks.html#storytop

One entry noted that somebody is maintaining database on the failures. As a dual 2.5 GHz G5 owner (liquid cooled), I'm watching these topics with great interest (and worry)...

How does one remove the G5 plate on the colling system to inspect the pump for leaks?

My 2.7 dual is now in the hands of AppleCare. It started displaying wild fan symptoms about ten days ago. A cursory inspection showed no coolant leak, however the tech said just because you don't see it, doesn't mean it hasn't started. Apparently a small amount of leakage can cause the logic boards to start going wacky even though the machine will still function. If your machine starts behaving different in any fashion, get it to AppleCare ASAP. Don't wait for it to get worse.

If you have a big leak, it might be obvious without having to remove the G5 CPU plate. However to remove the plate, you have to remove the little plastic pin on the upper right topside of the plate. It's a nasty little beast to get out, but I removed mine by using a small sharp mini screwdriver and a lot of patience.

Now, all this said, not all the G5's leak. I did some research at some sites that are tracking these things, and the leakage rate appears to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 20%. That means you have about an 80% chance of not having an issue. Also, the reports say that some of the G5's use a Panasonic liquid cooling system that has had zero (or almost zero) problems, so you are primarily at risk if you are using a G5 with the Delphi pump system.

Anyway, the dual g5 is a great machine, I just wish I had gotten the one the the Panasonic cooling system. :-/

Is there a way to tell which cooing system you have without removing the G5 logo plate?

Only if the G5 has a severe leak. To check thoroughly, you need to examine the pump system, which is behind the G5 logo plates.
