**Firmware 1.0.2** What's new ?
Posted: Oct 5, 2007 3:56 PM

Hello everybody,

I've just upgrade the firmware to the fresh 1.0.2 version and... WoooooOOOH !
Here's the list of the improvements I discovered :

  • Faster, VERY faster menu access, everywhere in the iPod, cover flow, when you go backward in menus.. etc.. THANKS a lot for this Steve ;)

  • That's all for now, after few minutes of using..

If someone find something else, post it !

I'm really curious to know if the update will issue some sound quality problem. Every other bug will be fixed easily. And yes! It's way faster now :)

It is way faster. I think it's almost as fast as the 5G iPods.

Still has messed-up contact photos. Same screen saver (I never minded it though). Sound quality seems about the same. I think it's resolved 1 out of my 3 issues with the Classic (responsiveness check, bugginess, sound quality).

FINALLY an update that solves some of my major problems!

It now CAN hold all of my music/playlists without freezing, thank god.... finally
It now CAN hold all of my photos besides my music without freezing :-D

The Menu access is indeed much faster, but did you recognize, when you're playing a song then navigating through the menu is much slower (but still faster than before the update...) ?

Only problem I've notices that didn't change:
"Now playing" in the menu still doesn't show the artwork.

I really have to say: "GOOD JOB developers @ apple!"

Good news and bad news regarding TV Out capabilities.

The good news is yes, the TV Out option can now be changed to ON or ASK.

The bad news is when I actually try to play visual content with my third-party accessory (the Yamaha YDS-10 dock), I get a screen with a picture of an Apple iPod cable saying "TV Out Enabled Please Connect Video Accessory."

So it looks like you still need accessories with the Apple authentication chip for TV Out to actually work. Kind of expected that. Nice to see the initial lock down gone, though.

Can anyone confirm if the workaround of 1st plugging into a supported cable, starting your video / slide show, etc. then unplugging and connecting to a third-party accessory still works w/ version 1.0.2?

Hi,
following tests I did to check "my" buglist:
-Contact Labels (from the Addressbook work/private) are still not correctly displayed
-when listening to a song on the iPod and/or rating the song will NOT be synched if before synching with iTunes you play a Game
  • Bought Games Preview Picture: Ms. Pac-Man shows now a preview picture, Tetris just a black square

Overall, the GUI seems a lot more faster, but those cited small glitches/bugs are still present.
Can anybody cross-check?

...I will check now if on the Apple Hi-Fi the settings menu is back or not...

Cheers,

S.

Edit:
Spoke too soon.

What is the point of unlocking the TV Out On/Off/Ask feature if you still can't use it with non-Apple hardware??

Grrr!!!

Looks like we will have to make some additional noise!

Additional Note: CoverFlow

CoverFlow seems now to sort my "Compilations" Albums (several different artists on 1 CD) correctly (!!)
Looks like CoverFlow is now usable on the iPod ;-)

Maybe I'm a bit optimistic, but my 80GB "seems" to sound fuller after the update. With my Sony buds, the sound seems to have more range than before. Of course I can't do a direct comparison, but I remember not being thrilled with the dynamic range before. (Probably more similar to the "snappy" feeling of OS updates rather than a true improvement...).

Main Gripe - Still not updating play counts or ratings (with or without playing games)

I suspect this is an iTunes issue. I read the details of how iPod stores photos and it does no scaling or conversion itself. The photos are converted by iTunes and stored in a proprietary file format that the iPod can decipher.

Have you tried doing a re-sync of your photos?
