Sanyo Xacti HD1000 vs. QuickTime (green video)

I recently purchased the Sanyo Xacti HD1000 camcorder which shoots 1080i video in AVCHD format on SDHC cards. Great little camcorder and I assumed it would work with the new iMovie '08 but it doesn't.
I've been told to downgrade to QuickTime 7.1 by Sanyo but iMovie '08 requires QT 7.2 so there's a conflict here.
Is there something I'm missing? I was impressed iTunes and QuickTime come bundled with the camcorder but since I was told by Sanyo that this camera would indeed work with iMovie '08 I feel like I'm doing something wrong.
Anyone??

You're right except for the AVCHD thing...although AVCHD is also a flavor of MPEG-4 using H.264 as the codec, the actual encoding scheme is different from AVCHD. Apparently the older HD-1 and HD-2 use MPEG-4 works with iLife 08, but because the 1080i is so new, Apple and Sanyo have yet to provide the quicktime component so that it will be compatible with the latest QuickTime (which is the engine that drives iMovie and Final Cut); hopefully with OS X 10.5 we'll see an update to QuickTime as well with the compatibility we're looking for.
FYI, I too recently got the HD-1000-isn't it AWESOME! 'cept for the fact you can't work on it on the Mac yet!!! Argh!

Just to clarify-1080i isn't new, but 1080i on H.264 is relatively new-only being used in AVCHD and Sanyo's implementation of H.264.

I had the same problem. Since I could not downgrade to 7.16 I just swapped the QuickTimeH264.component in System/Library/Quicktime from the 7.2 version to the 7.16 version. I picked up the 7.16 version of Quicktime here at Apple site then extracted the file.
Actually I did on a PC as well.
Now both are playing the fullHD 1920x1080 videos of the HD1000.

Can you tell me how you extracted the v716 QuickTimeH264.component from the QuickTime716.pkg?

As I remember I did a show package contents and there is a file called archive and after double-clicking it extracted a lot of files and within those was the QuickTimeH264.component.

Hi,
That was VERY helpful! I bought the Xacti HD-1000 today and used it for some pickup shots for a feature film never dreaming that a machine taht created Quicktime files wouldn't work in Mac OS X! I used your procedure and now my FullHD footage is in my Final Cut 6 project, merging well with other footage.
BUT: downgrading the H264 component in Quicktime seriously disrupted Final Cut Pro 6 so I couldn't leave it in place. What I did was:
1. Followed your instructions to enable Quicktime (Pro) to open the files
2. Used Quicktime's Export feature to make new copies using the ProRes 422 codec
3. Restored the corerect H264 component to the Quicktime folder
The I launched FCP and had a moment of panic when the program told me it couldn't open my project file because the project file "might be too recent for this version of Final Cut Pro" (I'm already using the latets version of Final Cut Pro).
But then I turned the computer all the way off and when I turned it on again, FCP worked fine and I was able to import and use the new files which I had made with the Quicktime Fie > Export function.
Obviously we need a working Quicktime codec ASAP.
P.S. I also tried loading the Xacti windows software under parallels but he "Nero Essentials" package that comes with the camera doesn't seem to offer any file-changing capabilities.

Is there a way to upload the footage you've shot directly to YouTube on the Sanyo HD1000 without reformatting it? Just curious here.
IF you do have to reformat it, is there a third party application that can turn it into a format that iMovie HD '07 can handle? (Really dislike iMovie '08)

Hi,
I am glad that I was able to help. It is very interesting that the Software manual supplied by Sanyo does state that Quicktime is "Compatible with 720p or lower video clips." (Page 5).
About your FCP, I don't have it but Express has no problem playing back. Since I did not do any editing I cannot say if it will work or not.

Can you shoot in any other resolutions on the Sanyo HD1000 and use the footage on the Mac?

I'm a new Mac convert -just got my 24" iMac this week (yay!) to make home videos with my HD1000. After implementing the fix outlined here I can play the videos but at Full HD the playback is choppy. I tried the HD-HR resolution and it plays nice and smooth but at the Full HD resolution it gets really jerky. Is anyone else experiencing this?
I downloaded the Ducati video from the Quicktime HD gallery and it plays just fine -and it's even over 21 Mbps bit rate! The HD1000 Full HD bit rate is only 12 Mbps! The only significant difference I see is that the frame rate on the Ducati video is 24fps and the FR on the HD1000 is 60fps. Its odd to me that a higher bit rate video plays smoother than a lower bit rate video.
Any ideas?

Hi All ....... yup ... just taken delivery of the HD1000 ..... nice!
Would also like to use it to it's full 1080i potential.
Have got as far as extracting the QT 7.1.6 QuickTimeH264.component file - but when I try and replace the 7.2 component file in System/Library/QuickTime I get the message "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges fo "QuickTimeH264.component"".
Help gratefully accepted !

BC, I got the same error. I had to move the 7.2 file to the trash first then copy in the 7.1.6 file.

Full HD movies in 10.4.10 !
Now to upgrade to Leopard and see what happens!!

OK ....... I've now upgraded to Leopard ........ and was back to the non functioning Green Window when trying to play a Sanyo 1080i movie!
Tried our fix of replacing QuickTime's 7.2 QuickTimeH264.component in Leopards System/Library/QuickTime with the QT 7.1.16 version (which worked in 10.4.10!)
However, now under the Leopard the movie plays (yes!) .... but the sound is not synced to the video (they appear to be running at different speeds) and the video itself appears jerky!
What happens now ...... anybody else experienced this ??
