discs are repeatedly ejected, can't be read
Posted: Oct 12, 2007 1:30 PM

Hey,
I'm having this problem where any disc I try to insert into the drive is ejected after about a minute and where the computer cannot read the disc. It makes noises like it's trying to read the disc, but it is ejected anyway. It doesn't matter how scratched the disk is, because this happens even to new discs. What should I do?

Good Afternoon,

You may wish to try reading the System Discs that came with your MacBook, if you experience the same problem that you described thus far you will want to call Apple or, preferably, drop into your local Apple Store's Genius Bar and consult with a Genius there. It is a possibility that your drive has gone bad.

Hope this helps! 

I have been having the same problem with my MacBook and I am in Africa so I can't really send it in to get it fixed. I would just like to know what all can be done that might possibly fix this problem. If I can get the disk drive to work, I think I can fix the other problem with my MacBook. It's getting very frustrating!!

I also have been having this problem since last February. I took my computer into the Genius Bar and was told that some of the optical drives are incompatible with certain types of CDs and DVDs (generally older models). His brilliant suggestion was to look for a patch on the web somewhere, which I was never able to find, or to ask the manufacturer of my disk to send me a new one (not possible).

I would love to find a solution to this as well. Do mac people ever actually read this thing? They should know how common a problem this is! It's very upsetting.

I also have this problem. My drive worked fine for about the first four months, and then one day stopped reading any and all disks.

It will accept the disk in the drive, whereupon I will hear a slight ticking like a watch running 3x normal speed; this ticking persists until the disk is ejected. About five seconds after the disk is loaded, I hear a loud buzzing sound that lasts for about one second and stops. Another five seconds, another buzz. And again. And then the disk is ejected.

Taking a mac in isn't really an option as I'm living in a small town in Germany--this problem is ridiculous enough to swear off apple computers forever.

Uh oh...I live in a major city, so the Apple store is very easily accessible. My problem was solved...by getting a new laptop covered by my warranty. Apparently, the problem was bad enough where the work for replacing the optical drive would actually cost more than a new laptop ( i don't really understand, but I'm not questioning them)
For all those without access to the Apple store Genius Bar, i have no clue what you would do. From the sounds of it, a non-apple repair might cost quite a bit, especially if replacing the drive and doing repairs can cost more work than a new laptop :S
really sorry to be the bearer of bad news

Demonicc,

about how long did it take from the time you took it in to get it repaired to the time they realized that they had to give u a new laptop, and to the point where u finally got it back? I'm having the same problem, and im guessing that they might do the same for me, i live in Los Angeles so theirs many apple stores around here. Thanks, your advice is much appreciated.

I am not sure if it is the same problem or not and I hate to tell anyone to open up their mac but I had that problem and I opened the laptop and took out the disc drive itself. Then I re-attached it. Sometimes it might take a day but then it will work. I had to do this about three or four times during the life of my computer but I am not near an apple store and didn't have time to send it off. But be careful! I also tore a piece of plastic that eventually tore even worse and I can't even turn on that computer anymore! Just go online and read how to take it apart and you should be fine.

My MacBook Pro is just about a year old and in the last few weeks I have run into the media I have been using for the last year is suddenly not working. Is this a firmware update issue or the drive is bad? I will call Apple Support today when they open.

I came upon this discussion thread when I was having the same problem: Cds were being ejected from my player about 15 seconds after I put them in. Though DVDs worked fine. I took my computer to the nearest Apple Store Genius Bar and they said the drive had to be replaced. I wanted to write in because I got the whole job done for FREE because I was still under my 1 year limited warranty. So if you bought your computer within the last year, and there's been no liquid damage that you know of, I highly recommend taking it in to an Apple store because this could be covered under your warranty. Good luck, everyone!

For those of you who don't live near an Apple store, but are still under warranty (either the standard one year or the three year AppleCare) you can try this URL:
http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/
which will give the closest Authorized Apple Service Provider. Any repair they do should be covered under your warranty.

Or, if you prefer, try calling AppleCare (1-800-275-2273 here in the US, try google for foreign numbers). As long as it is still under warranty, they should find a way to help you out.

Yep.

Add me to this list as well. The Drive in my Macbook work fine for about 6 months. Then it started to get picky with media I had been using for months. Some times I could just keep feeding the DVD-R discs back into the slot and eventually the drive would give in and do it's job.

As of tonight, I can't get the thing to accept any dvd-r (This includes the Sony DVD-R that had always worked just a few months ago).

This macbook is the most disappointing Apple product I have owned in the last 20 years.

I recently had to take it in to get the dreaded "screen flicker" fixed. The repair guy replaced the whole screen and that seemed to work for a few weeks but the flicker has started again.

They did do that replacement for free ... and I'm sure that I can get the drive fixed for free (still under warranty) but this is NOT why I bought a Mac.

You don't pay extra for a Mac in order to get free repairs. You pay extra for a Mac to stay free from NEEDING repairs.
