I tried and it insisted it had to be version 10.4. I know of no work around.

Interesting that if Apple Safari for Windows has to deal with Java 1.6, and an up to date Windows has 1.6.0.3, then.... seems like someone would want to.

Cross-posting....hopefully someone at Apple will take notice.
This is a show stopper for me, and I will have to revert to 10.4, since my job as a software engineer for Sun requires Java 6--this will likely prevent a lot of people from upgrading, and there's a well represented Mac userbase at Sun.
It makes no sense that I could use Java 6 in 10.4 and now I can't--I even tried copying over the preview from my 10.4 backup and that crashes.
This is really disappointing.

I had posted on the "Where is Java 6?" thread that mysteriously vanished. Since it's gone, I'll post in this one, too.
Macs are my workstation of choice, but I develop Java applications for a living. If Java remains a "second class" part of Mac OS, it doesn't bode well. Hopefully, Java 6 will eventually materialize for both Leopard and Tiger.
I understand if Apple considers Java a lower-priority or Java developers as being a lower-priority segment of their market. However, if that's the case, I think it would be better to turn development of the Mac JVM over (i.e. like the JVMs for other popular platforms), rather than maintaining it, separately.

Apple keeps deleting posts where "USERS" ask for THEIR RIGHT to have what once was said from iJobs(for sure by now, that he had one of his vision), to make this Macintosh the best platform for Java developers.
I can't tell you how ****** off I am and with all others developer who have spent a fortune to buy this machine and the latest rip off.... leopard, released friday.
I am going to ask for my money back £139 british pound, arghhh!!!!
I'm not going to keep that look and feel of iLook iSpace etc, I want a productive machine and not a toy!!! DO YOU UNDERSTAND APPLE????
This is unacceptable!!!!

You work for Sun, and develop java, yet you can't tell us why Sun isn't fast enough at supporting an O/S that has been in the works for 16 months? Come on, this isn't a Mac issue, it's a Sun issue. Ask someone higher up where YOU work why we don't have a working, up to date, java implementation.

See my post above, how is this a Sun issue? Java is a Sun product, Sun has dropped the ball here, not Apple. Apple can only supply what Sun has developed for the Mac platform.

Since Sun develops Java isn't it Sun that is falling down by not having it ready for the launch of Leopard? Maybe you ought to complain to your bosses at Sun instead.

Sun doesn't provide the Mac JVM. Apple does.
As to "why" Sun doesn't provide the JVM, according to James Gosling, it's because "Apple wanted to do it." See here: http://blogs.sun.com/jag/date/20071016
(I wish Sun provided the JVM on Mac.)

As I mentioned, above, this is incorrect. You have an incomplete understanding of the situation. Java is a Sun product, but Apple has assumed responsibility for providing the JVM for Mac OS. Unfortunately, this has meant that Java developers (and users) on Mac have often had to wait for JVM updates, while other platforms do not (especially for the big updates like 1.4 to 5, and 5 to 6).
I'd guess that, originally, Apple wanted responsibility for the Mac JVM so they could integrate it tightly with Mac OS. For example, the Apple look-and-feel, the Java-Cocoa bridge, et cetera. At this point, some of those features have gone by the wayside, anyway.
Actually, I can deal with a reasonable delay (although the delay for Java 6 is beginning to be too long), but I'd appreciate some sort of information on what the roadmap/plan is.
