Specific Problem With iChat 4 (Leopard)

Just tried video chatting and screen sharing with a friend, both ways, multiple times. We are both .mac and both using intel iMacs in the same city with the same provider. When I invite him I receive a message that he has cancelled the invitation. On his end it says there was a communication error. Same thing when we try it the other way 'round. I do not use iChat normally but was curious with the new features. Anyone have any suggestions as to what might be wrong?

It might have something to do with your router. I have an AirPort Base Station. I tried it with my dad who uses an old Linksys router. It worked fine. However, when I tried it with a friend who has a 2WIRE Home Portal we ran into problems. I sent an email to 2WIRE tech support to see if they can figure it out. What router do you or your friend use? The problem might be there.

This isn't good news for those of us who are hoping the iChat in Leopard will have fixed the ridiculous problems that so many of us have found ("insufficient bandwidth," "X has cancelled the invitation," "X did not respond"... need I go on?). If gotomypc.com can make it through a firewall and router I was hoping that Apple could figure it out too...

I have the same issue that's been introduced by Leopard. I've upgraded one machine in the house, my Core Duo 17" MacBook Pro, to Leopard. Once we started testing out iChat, we found that we couldn't start a video chat with the machine running Leopard/iChat 4. The Leopard machine repeatedly gets the "did not receive a response" communication error.
I don't think I can blame this on ports or router configuration or anything else. All machines are connecting through an Airport Extreme base station; I've tried to connect to the MBP with one machine that's also wireless and with one machine that's plugged into the base station.
The other two machines, a Power Mac G5 and a MacBook both running the latest Tiger update, can video chat with each other fine. And the MBP connected happily prior to Leopard.
The G5 is using an AIM login while the MB is logged in via .Mac. I normally use an AIM login on the MBP, but have also tried logging in via .Mac and creating a video chat using Bonjour.
iChat has always had occasional connection problems like this but those were easily solved by one or both parties logging off and back into iChat. That's not working in this case. I was looking forward to checking out the effects and other cool features in iChat 4. So far it's been nothing but a big disappointment.

I do not have any firewalls running and my ports are all open as well. Like I said in the original post, I never used iChat before so I am not familiar with the problems you all speak of above. I finally have an interest in the program with the "share my desktop" feature and now I find out there have been issues all along. Dang. I am going to go research some of the Comcast posts. I see there are quite a few of them and it makes me wonder. The two friends I was trying to video chat/share desktop with are both on Comcast as well.
By the way, in addition to the above info, I am using Comcast with a cable modem connected to my iMac via ethernet. I do not have an airport base station. I share the connection through the card in the iMac. There are two other laptops in the house but they have not been upgraded to Leopard.

Hi
Ah Comcast.
Set the Quicktime streaming setting, goto sys prefs/quicktime/streaming/streaming speed, set to 1.5mbps(dont use automatic)
In ichats prefs click on video and change bandwidth limit to 500.
Restart iChat.

I tried changing the Quicktime streaming setting as well as limiting iChat video bandwidth to 500. No go. I tried both .mac friends again as well as an AT&T DSL user. Same exact errors as above. Anyone have other suggestions?
Thanks.

I am having the same exact problem. I have a Linksys VOIP router in front of an AirPort Extreme base station. My OS X firewall is off, and I am configured in the DMZ, so I have no issues connecting to my computer via SSH, for example, so I don't think its a router problem. UPnP is enabled, and all DoS type settings are off on the router.

Ok guys. Got this from another thread. You have to turn off internet sharing in system preferences. After that it works like a charm. I was able to do both video chat and screen sharing with a friend. Really cool stuff. Now, since I have a roommate sharing my internet connection through airport this poses a problem. I can only use video chat and screen sharing when she does not need to access the internet. I hope apple fixes this problem down the road. I'm just happy I finally got it to work!
Thanks.

Has anyone got a solution for this yet?
I have tried the quicktime settings change - no good
My internet sharing is already off?
Very annoyed with this - worked fine with Tiger, upgrade and now nothing!
Thanks

This must be a major iChat bug. It seems its only turning up, at macs, that have been upgraded to leopard.
