My iMac G5 is two years old and now have a thin vertical red line on the screen.
Is it a hardware problem?

Wow, mine too! Mine is also exactly 2 years old and it always stays on at night. This morning when i wake it up from screensaver it has a vertical red line in it! As i rebooted I noticed that it flickered off and on with the desktop showing normal. So I am guessing this must be SOFTWARE? I have Leopard installed. Any ideas on how to fix this? Reboot did not change anything.

wow!
Theres nothing else we can do about it, i think it might be "logic board or video card for the display" problems, that is what i heard about it, my friends had 67 lines on his iMac display, that is terrible!!! why Apple do nothing about it!!!

I went to an authorized apple support just now. The guy told me once they figure out if it is the logic board or the LCD they would have to replace either. He said in 70% of the cases it is the LCD, but they can only tell once they swap it out and test it. Plus he said my iMac was on the way of failing at some point. He also told me it would cost me a minimum of R$2000= USD $1100 to get it fixed. That is INSANE. Considering a new basic iMac 20 costs here $2300, I may just do that. But I will use this one until it becomes unusable. I have ONE line right now, thats something I can live with for a few weeks the most though.

hahahaha they replaced my harddisk, screen, graphic card, fibre cable, and logic board. Whole new computer and still i have the screen problem. How blind can they be? The better had rreplaced it by a new 24inch al. one the costs uptill know where 2200 euros (ex labour costs. happily in garanty period. (also the december 2006 model.
buttt i still have the problem. no i am asking myself and the apple repair center, is it a firmware problem? (but still returning that **** thing because of the garanty).
the more macs, the more problems.

It could be a software issue, because since the first time I rebooted the lined went OFF for a second or 2 and that seemed ODD, while the rest of the screen still showed my normal desktop.

I ran the Apple Hardware Test CD (iMac version 2.5.3)
Extended Tests - Elapsed Time 54min 34sec
AirPort: Passed
LogicBoard: Passed
Mass Storage: Passed
Memory: Passed
Modem: No device found (of course)
Video RAM: Passed
This leads me to believe it is maybe something with the LCD itself. I detected some residue from a liquid (condensation?) exactly on the line where it shows all the way top to bottom. Weird.

Hi Marcus
I did test everything the samething what you did.
Last night i took my iMac to my friend to looked at it, he told me that might be Video Card or something with the LCD itself.
And tell you what, i am not going to buy iMac again, it is better to buy G5 Mac Pro. Tower, iMac is not good anymore.
Hey i am wondering if Steve knows that everybody has the problem with iMac display? and why he does not do something about that???
