Dashboard Dead - help?
Posted: Oct 30, 2007 11:57 PM

when i click for dashboard, it's blank, all the widgets are gone, and when i tried to add a widget, it returns me to the desktop.

i tried deleting (yourHome)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist and dashboard.plist
i tried repairing disk permissions
i tried these terminal commands "defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled boolean NO" and "killall Dock"
i turned off all of the parental controls (which is when this problem seemed to appear) and even went so far as to delete the guest account that i had been tinkering with parental controls and adding a new guest account, to which the dashboard works fine.

still, nada.

this is a semi-repost but the other post was in the 10.4 forum.

i miss my dashboard.

Helpful

Okay - same thing happened to my dashboard when I upgraded my PPC G5 (but not my MBP - go figure). The solution is to click the dashboard application icon - you'll get a blank dashboard overlay with the dashboard dock at the bottom. Just drag the widget icons from this to the blank area above and they should shimmer into being for you. Sorted.

Just thinking out loud... Do you have a .Mac account, and have you configured Widget syncing? I'm thinking maybe a sync went wrong, and it's causing issues with your Dash?

i do have a .mac account and i haven't configured widget syncing. i haven't gotten that far and i'm not entirely sure what that is exactly.

this is on my G5, if that matters at all.

tried it. no love. =( the only thing that will come up is the manage widgets.

i have a feeling this has to do with the Parental Controls tinkering that i did. that is when this started.

I installed Leopard and popped up dashboard. I have many widgets: converters, stock tickers, tide tables, various clocks, etc. Amongst my carefully arranged array of widgets, a new calendar had appeared whose third pane provided a place to enter iCal items. I deemed this cool, but it disturbed the symmetry. So I rearranged a bit and all was well. For two days. Tonight when I punched the mouse button, Dashboard opened with Tiger's original, generic widgets--the old two-paned calendar, Cupertino weather, calculator and clock. What happened? I want my widgets back. Any clues?

this is not what i consider a fix, but a a work-around. seems to me you shouldn't HAVE to do it this way (you listening, Apple?), but it may work for others as it did for me.

i went into the guest account, turned on the parental controls for all widgets and dashboard. then i logged into the guest account to make sure the widgets/dashboard worked. they do. then logged out of guest and logged back into my admin account and the widgets/dashboard worked.

this is totally off topic, but which widget was it that allowed you to enter iCal items? sounds interesting.

I was having a lot of problems with Dashboard too. Here's what I did to fix it:

  1. I used Dashboard’s built-in Widget Manager to delete all non-Apple Widgets.
  2. I deleted the Widget cache files at ~/Library/Caches/DashboardClient/.
  3. I deleted these preference files:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dashboard.client.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dashboard.plist
Deleted all pref files starting with widget-com…
  4. Logout

So far this has worked. But, if I try to add any third-party widgets back in, Dashboard breaks again. There is definitely a bug.

The Third-Pane Ghost may not be "off topic" at all; maybe it's a clue. On my first viewing of Dashboard after Leopard install, the iCal calendar widget which most folks keep in the center of the screen (the black one with Today in the left pane and the month in the right pane) had a matching third pane on the far right with iCal appointments in it and an "Add" feature. I deduced it to be an improved Leopard version and quite nice but did not try it out. I have now rebuilt my dashboard successfully but am unable to get this Third-Pane to return. I followed the advice of diving deep into permissions and so forth and discovered in the error log that an unexpected crash of Dashboard had occurred unbeknownst to me. I have tried reinstalling that iCal widget to no avail. Anyway, due to your kind advice, I am back to normal (in this area) but still curious about the fleeting Third-Pane Ghost. Thanks to all.

i found that particular iCal widget. i noticed that if i clicked on the single date a second/third time, the third iCal info pane opens up but there is no way to input information and it only shows one event when i have tons of others. nice idea but...

also, now that dashboard is working again, DockSyncClient and SyncServer as well as several widgets are taking up a phenomenal amount of RAM and activity monitor doesn't name which widget is which anymore.

sigh

any ideas would be much appreciated.
