Dropping network connection intermittently
Posted: Nov 2, 2007 12:41 PM

I sent this into the Apple feedback form but I thought I would put it here and see if anyone had anything helpful to say.

I am a network engineer for an ISP and I work from home. I am having a problem with my Mac Pro as far as the wired connection dropping out intermittently (ping, web browsing, and all logical connectivity). All I have to do is a DHCP Renew or statically define the interface and it works fine.

All the while I have VMWARE running on the Mac Pro (windows XP) and it never drops out or has an issue at all. (proving that the Physical interface is not loosing connection or having issues) I had this problem before after and during the installation and running of VMWARE.

It is extremely frustrating because I called tech support and they said there was nothing they could do other than send an FYI over to the engineers. This (to me) seems like a driver issue on the OS X side of things, I have read a lot on the forums and the general consensus is that lots of users are having issues with speed, drop outs, and connections not coming back after the computer enters sleep mode.

I would really appreciate some kind of response letting me know someone got this, is working on it, or anything for that matter. Thank you in advanced for your time.

How are you connecting to the internet? Are you sharing with another computer?

No I have a netscreen Firewall/Router as my core router and I have a switch in between me and the netscreen. I have a Mac book pro that is working fine with the same software and network configuration here at home btw

I have several Macintosh computers, including two Mac Pro's. I've been running Leopard pre-releases since the beginning of the year, and have been running the current build since it was released. In all this time I have never had problems with my Ethernet connection, at home or at work. I realize this doesn't help you, but I suspect your problem is machine specific, not a bug.

He is not alone. I have been using the same setup for 12 months, at least, and the only change is the installation of 10.5. Since the "clean" install of 10.5, I have intermittent drops from the local network and the internet.

Well for what it's worth, I'm experiencing some ISP weirdness as well. I've got cable, and after a while of using my Mac Pro, the network connection to the ISP drops. My Linksys router then reverts to a self-assigned style IP address (192.168.1.100 or something) and no DNS entry. So, no Internet joy. I've also tried plugging the Mac right into the cable modem, bypassing the Linksys as a way of narrowing things down, and it does the same thing - in System Prefs / Network I can literally see the ISP's settings disappear and the defaults come back. But unfortunately, it's still impossible to tell if it's the Mac or the ISP and hard to get the tech support people at the ISP on your side (not that they don't want to help, but they can't really tell what's going on from their end). They want to send a cabling guy out to have a look. I've been wracking my brain trying to figure this out. Mostly I feel like it might be the cable modem, but then again this only started happening after a Leopard install (clean install with migration assistant). FWIW, I have never, ever had any downtime from my cable ISP, they've been great, and the last tech I spoke with said because cable switching points service like 100 users at a time, if it was a switching problem many people would be affected and it would show up on their radar. I've even wondered if colder temperatures are affecting the cabling or equipment outside my house...because, and this could be a red herring - it only seems to drop at night. when I hop on in the morning, it's fine again! But sure as death and taxes, come 10 or 11, things slow down to a crawl and eventually I get bumped and no amount of router or modem restarts brings it back.

Well in my case, I work for the ISP that my connection is through. I have trouble shot inside, and out and verified that my router, connection and whole network is not the culprit here. The only constant that I see is the Mac Pro. My mac book pro as i mentioned earlier still works fine wired or wireless when the Mac Pro does not. I hope that we cant get enough people talking about this so they can see it is a real problem and address it.

very interesting - I have a macbook, maybe what I'll do tonight is hook it up directly to my cable modem and see what happens! I'll be disappointed if it turns out its a hardware issue on the Mac Pro tower, but at this point I'd be satisfied at least knowing what in the world is going on. I can't stand not knowing!

I dont think its a deal with the Mac Pro as I am having the exact same issue, only the computers are reversed. My Macbook Pro is updated with Leopard and having constant internet connectivity issues. Not being able to reach certain websites, while others are ok (such as right this instant I can get here but not a photography site I frequent) and occasionally losing all connectivity.

At the same time, the Mac Pro which is still running Tiger is working perfectly and without issue. Sites I cannot reach on the MBP can be had easily on the Mac Pro. So its most definitely an issue with Leopard interfacing with the network. I thought it might be something with the Airport cards on the MBP, but obviously it is affecting the tower as well when its running Leopard.

Most of the time, simply turning off the Airport and then back on resolves the issue for a bit, but it comes back, sometimes quickly, sometimes not.

Hopefully Apple is reading these forums and can get this straightened out. It definitely doesnt seem like everyone is having this issue, so hopefully its getting enough attention to get theirs.

I have a MacBook Pro Core Duo (32 bit) and I have had some IP issues as well. I am in a managed network, where I have to sign on every time I reconnect. From time to time I simply lose connectivity. The IP address does not change. Logging in and out does not help, but restarting does. I have not yet tried renewing DHCP. It could be the network not knowing what to do with Leopard; that would not surprise me. But I would also suspect Leopard.

It may not be relevant, but I was not affected by the loss of wireless signal bug.

This is very interesting...I'm looking for some assistance with this same problem, although, I have an iMac G4 and am only using OS X 10.3.9.

For a week now, I have been experiencing intermitten loss of my network connection. Restarting or doing a DHCP renew always corrects the problem for awhile...however, it always goes out again. Sometimes I have a connection for several hours, sometimes for only 30min. at a time. The time of day does not seem to be a factor.

I have spoken with my ISP provider and the problem doesn't seem to be on their end. However, one support person did suggest that my connection box may be faulty. It's not a new box, I've had it over a year, this is the first time I've ever had this problem. I have not yet tried exchanging my connection box.

I can't think of anything that I've done, prior to the time that this started, that may be causing it. I noticed that the first time I tried renewing the DHCP, the IP address had changed (to something very weird, the settings are locked and no one else has access)...it has not changed since, however, I'm still losing my connection.

I would love to know what's happening. If anyone discovers anything, please post it. The support people seem to be stumped as well.
Thanks
too funny....I lost my connection while I was trying to post this and had to come back. : )

The only constant that I see is the Mac Pro.

Have you tried bypassing your router?

I removed the Ethernet cable from the Airport, and plugged it directly into my desktop. The connection has remained persistent for the last 4-5 hours since I did this. I tried all the other tips found here before that. DNS servers, power-reset, dscacheutil -flushcache, etc, etc.

I installed Leopard weeks ago. For the first week or so, had intermittent drops, until I manually set 4.2.2.1, and 4.2.2.2 as my DNS servers. After that it was stable on the desktop, but NOT the Macbook Pro, for about a week. And then this morning it resumed dropping and slowing the internet connection on both computers. I tried different DNS servers, and now have left them blank, and am NOT using the Airport Express. So far so good.

For what is worth - I have a Mac Pro and I have the same issue with 10.5.1 dropping the network connection. I use the Mac Pro as File Server and Back-up. It is very annoying that it "disappears" from the network.

Back to my Mac was the culprit for me. Our firewall in the office was blocking the ports it wanted. So it started hammering pm.members.mac.com one port after another looking for one it could use. Opened the .Mac pref panel and turned off Back to my Mac, problem solved for us.

I have the same problem. I guess that it is a failure of Leopard
