Keyboard randomly stops working after Leopard Install
Posted: Nov 11, 2007 12:13 AM

Hey Everyone.. I see a few threads already but after installing Leopard my keybaord randomly just stops working.. The trackpad works fine but the keyboard goes completely dead.. Caps lock light is unresponsive.. I have found covering the speakers makes the backlights come on etc but does not effect the keyboard starting to work etc.

Apple.. There are multiple people talking about this.. FIX THIS.. I have 4 aftermarket apps on here.. Firefox, Adium, MS Office and VMware Fusion.. If one of these is the cause then ill remove them but i highly doubt it sooo..

Has anyone found a fix for this yet or have any ideas on how to fix it??

Its extremely annoying to go to type something and the keyboard in your 2500 dollar computer does not work...

The only app potentially messing with USB is VMWare. I would certainly uninstall that to be sure and run a 'kextstat' in a Terminal window to make sure you only have kernel extensions installed from Apple.

I removed it and still have the same problems.. I did how ever experience the issue less with the newest version of VMWare but regardless the problem still exists...

Same here, I have a brand new leopard install. Happens after sleep. See thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1227456&tstart=0

Same problem with my brand new MBP. Happens with the built-in keyboard, not an external USB keyboard.

Same problem here, built-in keyboard, no apps installed other than Apple's on (iLife '08, iWork '08, Aperture...). This time around however the freeze only lasted a few minutes - I got distracted by something else, on returning to my MBP it had switched into Expose all-windows mode (though I hadn't pressed any Expose-activating keys). From there on all keys worked as they should again. Weird.

I am having the same problem, and my computer is only 1 week old. The macbook pro's keyboard stops working randomly, esp when switching between applications (such as dashboard/safari)

Ok, so I paid HOW much for a computer that's ALREADY having problems?! FIX THIS APPLE.

Same deal. Main problem are the shortcuts and then the whole thing freezes.

Very annoying on a 1 week old computer!!!!!!

I have this problem with mine as well. Just purchased the machine in late August 07. It was fine under Tiger... but I noticed the keyboard occasionally not responding under Leopard.

Putting it to sleep and waking it up again fixed it temporarily, but then the issue came back after a few minutes of use. I restarted it, and it hasn't been an issue since. Since I like to leave my computer on sleep with all applications open, this is kind of an problem for me if it should return- I hope it's fixed soon.

I'm just adding myself to the list of people having this exact same issue. I noticed it a couple of days ago when trying to adjust the volume on iTunes. The entire keyboard stopped working. No light when I pressed Caps-Lock. No response at all. I rebooted and it fixed it, but now I'm noticing this problem more and more. I've only had this laptop for 2 weeks, so I plan on calling apple and requesting an entirely new laptop.

so as i was just typing this i had the same exact problem... i've had it for a couple days now

the solution (without restarting your computer) is simply to hold down a key for a few seconds (usually takes between like 5 seconds and 10 seconds for me)... sometimes i hold one key for 5 seconds then another for 2 seconds and it comes back on

restarting is the only other solution that really works...

Please let us know how you make out with Apple; I, too, would like a new computer that works as well as my PB-G4 did. My MBP is not quite 3 weeks old and I've had similar problems with the keyboard, as well as my TurboMouse. I wasn't sure whether my problems were the actual computer or the new OS, Leopard, plus throw in that I tried to connect the MBP to my clear 23" Cinema Display which gave me a whole rash of problems. When I called AppleCare this morning, I got a guy who had to keep looking everything up; I think I knew more than he did. He eventually gave up and told me to go to an Apple Store which is not a good option for me considering its distance from me.

I've tried to find info concerning the Cinema Display connected to the MBP because I remember seeing something about it and Sleep, but I can't find anything from Apple. The Discussion group on the Displays doesn't seem to have any definitive answer either.

Neither are 'real' solutions. A real solution is a Mac that does not need to be slapped to function properly.
