TAM Speaker Issues

Hello. I am hoping that someone has some info one the 20th Anniversary Mac. Mine has a terrible buzz, well, more than a buzz, coming from one of the speakers. Muting the sound does not help. Re-booting does help for about a minute, then it starts up again. Does anyone know how to take the TAM apart to get to the speakers? Or do I need to do something else. Help! It's just a pretty paper weight right now, and I'd love the be able to use the thing. I got a good deal on it, but not if I can't stand to turn it on.
Thanks for any help you can give.
Kathy

The problem is caused by corrosion in the large multi-pin connector inside the subwoofer, which is only tin-plate and should probably have been gold plated. Users report that opening the unit and cleaning the contacts solves the problem temporarily, and also applying anti-corrosion compound solves the problem essentially permanently.

There was an illustrated step-by-step available online. Perhaps someone still has the link.

I think Kathy means the two speakers on the side of the machine, is that right?
Mine does this also, starts off Ok then as it gets warm starts to fizz and crackle. I read that this could be dry solder joints in the speakers but it was a complicated ordeal to remove and repair.
My solution was to plug a pair of old Apple Design Speakers II (nice rare black ones) in and it is fine. Not making the best out of the Bose sound system but at least the machine is still usable.
hope this helps

Hi mkjj-
Welcome to the Apple discussions!
It is certainly true that poor solder joints or corrosion in the side speakers could cause problems there.
Are you connecting your new speakers using the headphones output jack, or using the same wiring as the original side speakers?
I am merely repeating the conventional wisdom: the SubWoofer contains the amplifier for all the speakers, so fixing corrosion on its connector fixes problems with the side speakers, too.
As always, you may not be seeing the exact same problem others have reported. Your mileage may vary.

Thanks for the welcome, I am just using the headphone jack, my TAM came with a letter that states the sub had been fixed (and I have a spare which last time was OK).
Not being a techy person I just presumed that the side speakers are separate from the sub but thanks for clearing that up, I will dig out the spare sub and try that one again, it is some years since I tried it.
It will be the new year when i can get to it but will post back and let you know the results!

What version of the Mac OS is your TAM running? If it's running Mac OS 8.1 or earlier the Audio TuneUp 2.0 might help with the audio issues.

If corrosion is the issue you could try caiglube deoxit. It's a cleaner/protectant that I use personally. I've seen it restore a fader on a mixer that had pepsi spilt in it. It's a corrion remover and leaves behind a film of protectant and it;s a cheap fix for alot of electrical dilemnas.
