The latest update killed my laptops

I’ve got a 1.42GHz 14” iBook and a 2.2GHz MacBook both are having the same issue. I installed updates last night and now neither computer will boot. They are stuck on that gray screen with the Apple logo and the pinwheel thing. Can’t get either one to start up in safe mode either. As an added bonus my nephew put the 1st install disk in my MacBook thinking he could reinstall the OS. That didn’t work and now we can’t get the disk back out. I’m running the latest version of Tiger on both systems. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm having the same problem- been stuck in the same grey startup screen all day, a result of the latest update. Restarting does nothing, just brings me back to the same screen. HELP!
As for the stuck disk- power down the computer, then restart it while holding down the trackpad button. I had to do this earlier today.

I am having the same problem. I am on the phone with Applecare as I type this ( on my dell ). We have already inserted disk one of OSx and checked the disk for needed repairs ( it was fine ) and repaired permissions and tried to reboot the machine from the hard drive: NO LUCK. Still have the gray screen with the apple and the twirly-gig.... I think I am now being elevated to the next level of tech support. Stay tuned.

Same thing for me. I updated my macbook yesterday morning and then when I tried to restart it... kaplow...nothing. What is going on? I have never heard of this kind of thing happening before, especially on an update.
I got school work I need to get done. This better be an extra special update for this much hassle. I think I'm going to try Apple Care and hopefully they can do something.

I have looked through the forums a little more...there are 3 threads at least running on this topic and Archive and Install seems to be the solution.

find your discs
turn our machine on
insert disc one
turn your machine off
turn our machine back on and as soon as you press the power button hold the "C" key down and keep holding it until the installation software boots up off of the disk. Follow the instructions to install but make sure you ARCHIVE and install. Look on the apple help forums for articles with instructions. Good luck.

PS - (I now realize) this process take several hours so if it is late, you might want to try this in the am.

Check the Tiger OS forum. That seems to be the place for this discussion. You might find help there - I've got one back up and running anyway.
