Dock is transparent!

Hi. I fiddled too much with changing the dock's appearance (both with terminal, widgets and "apps"). Now the dock is transparent (see pic, link below). How can I reset the dock to default?

I have this problem too. But I haven't done any of the customization you've done. Mine just spontaneously starts losing the gray surface at least once a day. Just happened again after I used Spaces. Logging out and in doesn't solve the problem, I have to restart. How annoying.

I have the exact same problem as the posters above, although without the attempts to change the docks appearance. I have been looking for a reference to another case for a while - search engines only bring up sites for modifications.
The problem seems to make the background and application reflections more prominent, and the reflection of application windows almost painful.
I think in my case logging out and in reverts it to normal, but it just happens again each time.
The 'Killall Dock' terminal command also doesn't work or change the situation.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I believe I have the same hardware configuration as the poster directly above.
Thanks.

I, too, have developed this problem twice since upgrading 3 weeks ago. I wasn't "fiddling" at all, just using Apple apps. Looks identical to the pictures above--dock looks transparent and I cannot see my stacks. It looks/works normally when moved to the sides, and restarting has corrected it (for now).

Add me to the list. Periodic "clear" dock, killall won't fix it. Restart is the only cure.

Try this site.
http://www.leoparddocks.com/
Lots of custom docks plus instructions on how to change the dock appearance.
You can also do this (and more!) using CandyBar
http://www.panic.com/candybar/
but it's not free.

Add me to this list. It mostly seems to happen when i have come out of standby mode or just exited Front Row.
The only way i can get out of it is by restarting, the killall terminal command doesn't do anything.
It also makes my stacks unusable.

Solved

one thing that might be causing this is a corrupt preferences file.
Try deleting com.apple.dock.plist in username/Library/Preferences. restart and see if that helped.

KiwiiDev - I am getting the same "blank" stack as your posted screen shot. This only happens in fan view, and not in grid view. Both the text and the icons are missing. It's fine after a restart, but it eventually comes back after a little while. Did you ever figure out a fix to this?
Thanks.
PS - I'm also getting the transparent dock. I did not use any special configuration nor 3rd party software for the dock.

Here comes a probably dumb question.
Just went to Leopards.com like you suggested, and went through all steps, but:
What and where is that "TERMINAL" in which I have to type -killall Dock - to get my transparent dock to work??
Thanks much

Thanks for the info V.K.!
For who it may concern.
After having done it like "leopard.com" suggested, my right klick options on my apps in my dock, did not show up anymore, neither did the trash full/empty.
So what me "non technical" guy did is: I ONLY exchanged those few png files inside the Recources folder, who fortunately had the same names, and now I'm a happy Dock user! All functions well, but with the new look.

I had the same problem with Leopard too. When I would come out of sleep mode, the dock would turn transparent and the stacks would just open into a set of grey bars without any letters on them. It looked exactly like one of the screenshots posted above. If I restarted the computer, the glitch would go away, but if it went back to sleep, the glitch would come back when I got it out of sleep mode.
I called Apple technical support and they asked me to shut down, disconnect all cords (including the power cord) for 30 seconds, and then hold down Option+Command+P+R all (all 4 keys at once) while restarting it. I was to hold them until the computer chimed twice and let go after the second chime, allowing the OS to continue to load. This would reset some set of settings to default mode. I did this, and I've put the computer to sleep and awakened it a bunch of times and the glitch seems to be gone.
I'll keep a watch on it and post again if the problem comes back, but the procedure the Apple tech described seems like a pretty harmless thing to try out.

Is there a real fix to this problem yet? Or just the vulcan nerve pinch described above?
