Mac OS X 10.5: Can I partition my hard drive to run OS X 10.4 and OS X 10.5

Is it possible to run Tiger as one would run, say, Vista?
This may seem an odd question but certain 3rd party software, in particular, my Voice Recognition Software has not yet been upgraded to run on Leopard.
Having a neurological condition that makes typing a very slow process, I would like to run to OSX10.4 until the VRS is updated.

I'm sure you could set up a virtualized drive to install Tiger onto and run the OS. Additionally you could install Tiger on another partition, but to switch between the two partitions you'd have to keep the "Startup Disk" preference pane handy.

Yes, you can partition your drive using Disk Utility. Then reboot from your 10.4 Install media and select the empty partition as the destination. You can select which system to use with System Preferences/Startvolume.

Can this be done with Classic and Leopard as well? I am having problems letting go of some old OS 9 applications.

Thanks Björn
I've created a new partition. But how do I make the computer reboot so I can reload 10.4 (I have the disks ready!)

Yes you can, as long as you've got OS 9 drivers installed for your hard drive (you can check this in Disk Utility) and have a computer that can boot OS 9.

Virtualization (like VMware Fusion or Parallels Desktop) can't run OS X, only other operating systems. So to use different versions of the Mac OS you need to partition your drive and reboot. It can be done with Mac OS 9 as well. Simply make sure you create enough partitions and leave enough space on every partition. The procedure is the same: create partition, reboot with the OS 9 CD and install it.
In order to use the "classic" Mac OS your HD needs to have the "Mac OS 9 driver" enabled in Disk Utility. If it has not, you need to repartition (this deletes everything) your HD and check to install the driver. Otherwise you can't install/boot Mac OS 9.

To boot from your install CD/DVD simply hold the c key on during startup until you notice it's booting from the CD (takes a lot longer than from your HD).

That's good to know. I would expect they could get it working, but for now it seems they're concentrating on non-apple operating system support. To an extent its kind of unfortunate, as I'd like to see a universally applicable virtualization environment that can support any operating system that will run on the hardware.

I see it the same way, Topher. It is annoying to keep older Macs around to check out stuff in previous versions of the Mac OS. Until recently it was not allowed by Apple (though it's certainly possible technically) to virtualize OS X. But I read somewhere that the EULA has/is about to be changed. It's a huge disadvantage in the enterprise level where Server virtualization is often needed.

Apple has allowed virtualization of the server version, but not the regular version.

Ah, that must've been what I read. Thanks, Robert. But as of today there's no software solution (VMware, etc.) that makes use of it, right?

I don't know the answer to that. It would be worth checking the VMWare and Parallels websites, if it's something that you need.
