Mac OS X v10.5: Changing account from Standard to Admin

I just went to update my software to 10.5.1, then realized I couldn't because the user name and password somehow doesn't work. I started from MAC OS X 10.5 Install DVD/Utitlities/reset password. My login window only has me in it and no drop down or other. Since I am listed as standard and not admin, I can't unlock to make changes. Please any help would b appreciated. I have been working on this for over 2 hours now.
Thanks

This is what I have been trying to do all day. I can't get to #5
Please please. any ideas?
Solution
1. Start from your Mac OS X 10.5 Install DVD. Note: You do not need to install Leopard again.
2. From the Utilities menu, choose Reset Password.
3. Follow the onscreen instructions to reset the root password (the root account is not the same as your account).
4. Restart from your Mac OS X Leopard volume.
5. When the login window appears, select "Other..." and log in as the root user using the password that was created above.
6. Go to Accounts preferences and check (enable) "Allow user to administer this computer" for the affected user.
7. From the Apple menu, choose Log Out root....
8. Log in as the user account that had this issue. (Your account should now have administrator access.)
9. Use Directory Utility to disable the root user via Directory Utility's Edit menu. You may need to click the lock icon first).

Restart the computer and press "C" upon boot. It should boot from the DVD drive. Alternatively you can press "options" on boot, and after a little while the computer will list the drives that have a startup volume on them. Select the desired volume (in this case, the one on the DVD) and click the button to continue.

Once you're there, follow these instructions:
1. Follow the onscreen instructions to reset the root password (the root account is not the same as your account).
2. Restart from your Mac OS X Leopard volume.
3. When the login window appears, select "Other..." and log in as the root user using the password that was created above.
4. Go to Accounts preferences and check (enable) "Allow user to administer this computer" for the affected user.
5. From the Apple menu, choose "Log Out root...."
6. Log in as the user account that had this issue. (Your account should now have administrator access.)
7. Use Directory Utility (in the "Utilities" folder) to disable the root user via Directory Utility's Edit menu. (You may need to click the lock icon first).

If I read the OP correctly, item #2 is a stumbling block. To restart, quit the Reset Password process. Then, Utilities->Disk Utility->select internal HD, and click Restart.
