iPhone stuck in Headset mode

Id like to report a bug. The iPhone will still think the head set is plugged in (internal ear piece/mic does not function) when I do the following:
1. Use the phone with the head set
2. let the phone lock itself after not using it
3. remove the head set AFTER the phone has locked
Solution:
Right now the solution is to unlock the phone, reconnect the headset and then unplug it. You can confirm if it is working because the "lock/unlock" sound will come through the phone speakers instead of the headset.
I have had this issue intermittently throughout my ownership of the iphone.
Apple PLEASE make sure the phone knows when the headset is disconnected. This has interrupted MANY of my phone calls for both business and pleasure.
Anyone else having this issue?

It happened to my iPhone a couple of days ago. I just tried to plug/unplug and twist the head phone jack, and it really worked for me. Just try it a couple times and see what happens.

It sounds like you may have a defective headset jack. Take your phone into an Apple store and get it checked.

My iPhone is stuck in headset mode, but it also automatically opens the iPod function when I plug in the headset and starts to play songs at random. No sounds when headphones are not plugged in. Not even keyboard clicks. Can only use phone w/ headset. Help!

Try stop the IPOD mode first and go to Home screen before unpluging your head set..
I noticed it while I use the IPOD mode then removed the headset then I lost all the sound on my iPhone. and the solution above always work on mine.

I just had this same problem. I eventually fixed it after repeatedly inserting and removing the headset and wiggling it around, but I was beginning to despair.
Just wanted to second your request that Apple seriously look into this problem.

This is how it happened to me. I was listening to itunes on my fm transimitter, I received a call, I unplugged the fm transmitter while the call was coming in, and I could hear nothing. I ended the call, and plugged the fm transmitter back in - i was still able to get music out of my iphone through the fm transmitter, but not through the speakers.
I tried restarting several times with no luck.
I could still play ring tones in settings through the speaker but nothing else. The ear phone was totally dead.
My solution, go get my iphone headset plug it in, play song, stop song, get out of itunes and then unplugged the headset, then everything was back to normal.

Phew. Your hint just saved me. I was unable to answer calls nor to hear the callers voice. Was wondering and resetted the iPhone several times.
You hint resolved the problem. Both Microphone and speaker of the phone now work as intended again. I plugged in the headset, which startet iPod-Mode automatically, it started playing music. I stopped it, went back to the springboard-screen and unplugged the headset: Works.
Thanks again.

iPhone locked in headset only mode
Cause: removing a headset while phone playing and locked.
Major symptom: no sound from earhole speaker.
Solution: (fastest) play a song from iPod or any lengthy duration audio clip and allow phone to completely lock. Insert iPhone compatible headset jack. Unlock phone. Stop audio. Unplug jack.
Resetting does not work.
Often I have my phone plugged into some speakers at work through an adapter. I grab my phone to run to lunch and forget to unlock first. Now its useless as a phone.
Workaround until you can get back to a headset: speakerphone will still work, but you will not be able to hear other things (youtube, iPod, etc)
Other way to diagnose problem: when you change the volume on iPod or video clip using the buttons on the side of the phone (not the screen slider bar) the dialog box will say headset.
At first I thought I broke the phone by pushing the jack in too hard, and was relieved to find out it was a fairly simple glitch. I don't think it is going to be easy for apple to fix though. It is pretty annoying.

I tried everything on this page, and none worked, so I connected it to my Mac to back it up before restoring it. After the sync was complete, I disconnected it from the dock, (without the headset connected) and then tried to play a song, and everything worked. So, I guess the moral of the story is...you never know what might work.
Thanks to everyone above.

I was able to get my iPhone working again as well by plugging and unplugging my headset in/out a few times.
HOWEVER....this solution is only helpful IF YOU HAVE YOUR HEADSETS WITH YOU!! I was away from my desk where I had my headsets sitting and couldn't get it resolved until I got home. Luckily I could use the speaker phone but that's not always the most glamourous way to take a call.
MORAL? Bring your headset with you wherever you go.
