Bookmark sync fix that worked for me.
Posted: Dec 5, 2007 12:46 AM

Repeated attempts to properly sync bookmarks failed, even after following instructions to unregister, etc. from Apple Support. I always ended up with all my bookmarks in .Mac under the Bookmark Menu, and none in the Bookmarks Bar.

Here's what did work for me: (modified from:
http://www.listsearch.com/Yojimbo/Message/index.lasso?2512)

Fair warning: This is just what I happened to find in my own search for a solution, modified for my own use. Use the following procedure at your own risk.

Back up all data, just to be safe.

Then:

  • Quit all apps which employ .Mac syncing (Address Book, Quicken etc.).

  • Uncheck all items in the sync window, then turn off syncing in the .Mac panel of System Preferences, and close the System Preferences app.

  • Unregister the computer under the Advanced tab.

  • Issue the following three commands in the Terminal to halt synchronization and delete your local sync data:

killall SyncServer syncuid

mv ~/Library/Application\ Support/SyncServices/Local/ ~/Desktop/

killall SystemUIServer

(You'll get a copy of some sync files on your desktop, which you can delete after this is done. You may also get messages about needing to login in to idisk. I ignored/canceled them, with no harm apparently done.)

Go to .Mac and login. Open Bookmarks and turn off Bookmark syncing. Logout.

Reconfigure .Mac sync settings as follows:

  • Bring up the .Mac settings panel

  • Turn the "Synchronize with .Mac" option back on, and choose a sync period of "Every Hour". Don't select any other options yet.

  • Close the .Mac settings panel

  • Reopen the .Mac settings panel and select the applications whose info you want to synchronize.

  • Turn the "Synchronize with .Mac" option off, and then back on

  • Close the .Mac settings panel

  • Open the .Mac settings panel, and ensure all boxes are checked for the applications you want to sync.

Start a manual sync from that machine via the .Mac system prefs panel.

I chose the option to replace .Mac data with my info.

Go to .Mac and login. Open Bookmarks and turn on Bookmark syncing. I chose to Reset data on .Mac with data from my computer.

Presto. The bookmarks were back, in the right folders, and all up to date.

This fix worked for me also. I tried everything else to no avail, but these instructions worked the first time.

I noticed that it generated additional messages in the docmacsync.log, indicating that it was doing a Full Sync. Resetting sync data didn't cause a full sync before?

And more interesting are these messages:

New dotmacsyncclient version detected - getting new version of sync client from Sync Engine
Setting new build version for .Mac Sync Client: DotMacSyncClient-155

This isn't really different from what Apple documents as an advanced step here for sync troubleshooting:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306122

The "mv" in Terminal is unnecessary, unless it is there to save time from manually opening the ~/Library/Application Support/ folder to remove the SyncServices folder.

I notice its the very last thing mentioned in the article, so probably not the first thing everyone wants to try.
